Those Grey Eyes

I shut the book I was reading and placed it on my lap. Staring ahead, I saw a lonely lizard on my empty wall. He wasn't a pleasant sight, so I closed my eyes and thought about the book I had read.

"You could tell your soulmate by the light in their eyes... The tradition of the Moon used a different process: a kind of vision that showed a point of light above the left shoulder of your soulmate."

'Soulmate'. The very idea pleased me.

I had seen a light in many people's eyes, but never one above the left shoulder.

"You have not met your soulmate yet," I told myself.

"Switch off the light and go sleep. You have to wake up early tomorrow," Mom said from the door.

We were to go to my Dad's house in Palakkad the next day.

I took the book from my lap-Paulo Coelho's 'Brida' - and placed it on my side-table. As I was walking to the switchboard, I stopped at my reflection in the mirror. I had seen this face in the mirror for sixteen years. I was never much of a beauty, so there was nothing to watch keenly.

But I still kept staring at the 'me' in the mirror only to disobey someone's advice that you shouldn't look in the mirror at night. (Strange illogical restrictions and I - we were never really friends). And that's when I noticed for the first time that I had attached earlobes. Words from the book resurfaced:

"People who were born with a Gift have very small, attached earlobes."

I was born with a Gift?!

The more I thought about it, the more ridiculous it seemed. Why, I had even learnt the reason behind having such ears, in my Biology class: genes, and recessive trait, and all the rest of it. I laughed at the dreamer in me that still wished to believe I was special. I laughed till tears ran down my cheeks.

I switched off the light and laid on my bed. It was all too quiet except the low rumbling of the fan. I closed my eyes to sleep. I heard the lizard click his tongue.

"You are special," I heard someone say.

Hallucination. I smiled as I cuddled against my pillow and fell asleep....
