Chapter One
Kella
"I've had enough!" I screamed at my father. "I'm LEAVING!"
"Wait, young lady," my father said. "You can't just leave- where am going to get my money from?" Hearing that, I clenched my fists. Even now, my father cared more for money than for me.
"That's the problem!" I yelled, furious. "You're a selfish jerk!" All you care about is money, money and money! And then, you gamble it away. What kind of father are you?" The tears I'd been trying to hold back all this while washed down my face, despite my feeble attempts to control them. "I've been enduring you all this while," I managed to choke out. "But now, I've had enough." Angrily, I wiped away my tears and picked up my bags. As I stalked out the door, I felt a sudden sharp pain shoot through my head. My eyes grew wide as I realized my father had delibrately pulled my long hair to stop me from leaving.
"Let go!" I gasped, immediately freezing against the pain. "Let go you son of bitch!" I turned, and with all the fast reflexes I'd picked up in my secret training at The Agency, I kicked out. The kick was swift and deadly- and I didn't mean for it to hit where it had- but I wasn't about to complain, because he let go. Yelping, my father leapt away from me like I'd burned him, and doubled over, hands over his crotch. His face turned pale and he didn't try to stop me again as I stormed out.
I set off into the night, presided over by the cobalt sky.

I knew exactly where I would go. Without the slightest hesitation, I flagged down a cab and hopped inside. "21 Alabsater Street," I said, and threw myself back into the cracked vinyl seat. I frowned when the cab didn't immediately start moving.
"What is it?" My voice was tinged with impatience. The cab driver shot me a mournful look in the wing mirror- and I had the satisfaction of seeing his eyes widen fractionally as he took in my looks, which I knew were good. Volumes of dark, chestnut brown curls, heavily lashed emerald eyes and pale skin. I heaved a sigh, and raised an eyebrow at the gaping man.
"Do you want to start moving now?" I suggested. He seemed to recover his composure.
"But 21 Alabaster Street is so far," he whined, sounding incredibly like a girl. I had an almost uncontrollable urge to giggle, which I fought venomously down my throat. Rummaging in my wallet, I picked out 4 twenties and threw them over to the driver's seat. "Get moving," I ordered. He did.
I settled back into the seat and watched the scenery speed by. It helped me to soothe my nerves, for which I was immensely grateful for.
I am Kella Reyes, 17 years old. From when I was 12, I'd been working diligently for The Agency, a secret organization that hunted down and killed vampires for the sake of humanity. By right, all agents were only allowed into the agency at age 18, but for me, they'd made an exception. I was the best at what I did, even better than older, more experience agents. It was not something my bosses lightly overlooked. Even so, I had not been fully initiated- and I was only allowed to work part time. only hoped that my bosses would look at the situation I was in now, hoped they would understand my plight and consider letting me become a full time agent.
"Ma'am," said the cab driver, jolting me out of my reverie. "We're here." I got out of the cab and my mouth was dry as I looked up at the tall and intimidating building. Could I really do this? Could I really pull off a miracle?
To be honest, I didn't know. But I had to try, because I was never going back to that hell hole of a "house".
Taking a deep breath, I pushed open those glass doors and stepped into a posh lobby with marble flooring and walls well adorned with gold framed mirrors. A few people were milling around, but it was otherwise empty. I followed the path I'd only ever walked once but that was seared into my memory. I went to an elevator and quickly stepped inside once the doors wee open-I didn't like the stares people were giving me. Once inside, I relaxed just a little.
I pressed the button next to level 16, my boss's office.
My heart slammed in a way it had never slammed before. It made me so anxious I felt sick. Swallowing down my fear, I stepped outside as the elevator doors dinged open, revealing a short corridor. The walls were white and sterile, absolutely blank and devoid of pictures. The floor was carpeted with red and gold patterns. At the end of the corridor, like a looming monster lying in wait to eat you up, was a white door with a shiny silver knob. A plaque upon it read: Miss Patricia, Boss, Agency Headquarters.I walked towards it, my legs feeling simultaneously like jelly and lead.
I knocked hesitantly on the door, and an authoritative female voice rang out, "Come in." I twisted the knob the same time my heart did a back-flip.
"Uh, good evening, Miss Patricia," I'm, uh, Kella Reyes, and..."
Her eyes narrowed as she looked up at me. "I know who you are," she snapped. "What are you doing here? Do you have an appointment?"
I blanched. She was so fierce. I forced my vocal chords to work and stuttered, "I'm sorry, Ma'am. I was just wondering if I could be formerly initiated. Into the agency, I mean. Ma'am," I hurriedly added.
She blinked, losing some of her ferocity. "Formerly intiated? Aren't you only 18?" I nodded, slightly abashed. "Yes, Ma'am." God, I felt like I was talking to a military commander. "But, um, I kind of left home today." I had to give it to her- she didn't try to pry. She just said, "Well...You are indeed one of the best agents we have. On the other hand..." Her brow was furrowed, like she was deep in thought.
"Okay, Kella," she said finally. "Sit down, and I'll give you a proposal."

10 minutes later, I was standing inside my dorm in the livng quarters of The Agency, now my new home.
The woman had cut me a deal. I would be formerly initiated into The Agency, as long as I worked full time and accepted a work partner. Of course I'd agreed- anything to live in The Agency, right? So now, I no longer worked alone.
I would start work tomorrow, and I was still feeling pretty strung up. I'd left home and accomplished a miracle all in one day. In fact, I still wasn't entirely sure it wasn't a dream!
As I lay in bed with my shoes off, I let my thoughts wander. Who would my partner be? A girl would be fine- someone my age. We could be girlfriends,! It had been such a long time since I'd gone out with my besties in school- of course now, I probably never would. But if it was a guy... well, let's just see if he could keep up.
I never felt so happy and exhilarated in my life before. As I closed my eyes and floated off to sleep, I wondered whether the life I was heading towards was worth it. It surely was, right? Nothing could be better than doing what I loved, and having fun at the same time.
But just before the black waters enveloped me, I felt a small part of me, just the teeniest, weeniest most miniscule part of me, crying for it.
