a ball of Atium in hishand.)
ELAND
So, this is the body of agod?
SAZED
Indeed your Majesty.
SCOUT
Koloss are just minutesaway the guards of the cavern doors can see them.
ELAND
(to SCOUT) have themen ready themselves for battle. (to SAZED) Based on whatyou've told us, chances that they won't be able to find us are veryslim.
SAZED
Unfortunately, yes evenwith this metal lining blinding Ruin it can not block his sense whenhe focuses it. (pauses) Thisatium is part of him. It is what he has been searching for the lastthousand years.
ELAND
Whichmeans we'll have a couple hundred thousand koloss trying to climbdown our throats... Sazed I say we give it to him.
SAZED

(DEMOUX enters hurredly)

Soldiers are in position my lord.
ELEND
How many do we have?
DEMOUX
The 300 that I brought with me, plus about 500 from the city, anotherhundred ordinary citizens that we armed with those Kandra hammers orspare weapons from our soldiers. And we have four different entrancesfor this cavern complex we need to guard.
SAZED
She will come my lord. (exits)
DEMOUX
This is bad.
ELEND
I know. Did you give the men Allomentic metal dust?
DEMOUX
What we could find. The people didn't think to bring powdered metalswith them when they fled Luthadel. We've found a couple of noblemenwho are Allomancers, but they were onlt Coppercloud or SeekerMistings. We gave the soldiers all of the normal metals, but none ofthem could burn those. Even if we had Allomancers we can't hold thislocation my lord. Not with so few soldiers , not agenst so many ofthose creatures we'll delay them at first because of the narrowentrances but... well
ELEND
I realize that Demoux, but do you have any other options?
DEMOUX
I was hoping you had some my lord.
ELEND
None here.
DEMOUX
Then we die.
ELEND
What about faith Demoux?
DEMOUX
I believe in the Survivor my lord. But... Well, this looks prettybad. I felt like a man waiting his turn before the headsman eversince we spotted those Koloss. Maybe the Survivor doesn't want us tosucceed here sometimes people have to die.
ELEND
it's the same problem, it's the same trouble. I failed back duringthe siege of Luthadel. Vin was the one who protected us then. Ifailed in Fradrix city only the Koloss getting distracted saved usthere. A ruler's most basic duty is to protect his people. In thisarea I'm continually impotent, useless. Why can't I do it? I spend ayear searching out storage caverns to provide food only to end uptrapped with my people starving. I search all that time looking forthe Atium hoping to use it to buy my people's safety, and then I findit too late to spend it on anything. Too late. Wait, years searchingfor Atium.
DEMOUX

None of the metals given to Demoux's group were unlike the otherMistfallen, but you got sick too. Your group is different. Demoux,eat this.
(ELENDholds out the bead of Atium that he has been rolling
aroundin his hand to DEMOUX.)
DEMOUX

ELEND

(DEMOUXtakes the bead and eats it)
ELEND
327 men were sick longer. 1/16 of those who fell sick and were themost sick. One out of 16 element to metals. The sickest must be ableto burn the most powerful of them all.
