Winter screamed. She could hardly walk, never mind run. Her legs felt stiff like an unoiled machine, every movement torturous. Something was ripping Tamer apart. And they were sharing pain. Terrified tears poured down her face as agony tore through her flesh. She felt putrid sick with worry. He was hurting, but she did not know why. She wanted to run back and find out for herself, but she had to get away. Red could not get a hold of her. Tamer would never forgive her if she were to go back.
Her heart felt electrified with fear. It seemed to gouge through her ribs with erratic aching hums, skipping beats so thoroughly that it literally ached. Terrified goosebumps erupted across her entire body, causing her to break out in sweat. She shook her head. Pain suddenly gouged her. She cried out, collapsing.
It's not real, she reminded herself. And yet, she felt as though she was being ripped apart. She attempted to crawl. But it was like she was in a nightmare. Her bones screamed in protest; it was difficult to even move.
It's not real, reminded herself. But then, she screamed as she felt as though she'd been impaled; tears poured down her face.
It hadn't occurred to her that there was something far worse than the pain itself. Moments ago, she'd been begging for it to stop. But then, when it finally did, her erratic heart froze with terror. Why did it stop?
The only conclusion she could come to was that Tamer had lost. She had not felt enough pain to signify that he was dead. But he might have fallen unconscious.
Tamer had lost.
Red was coming for her.
She ran. She ran harder than she ever had in her life. But she knew it wouldn't be enough. She ran for a very long time, until her lungs were hacking, but then, she felt the warm ignition of Red's aura crawl upon her skin.
She turned her head. Red landed gracefully on the ground. The white light erupting from his skin was entrancing. Like the light at the end of the tunnel at this wretched nightmare. He was evil. Pure, pure evil. But by God's, was he beautiful. A nightmare of a predator presented as a pleasant dream.
She wanted to scream. But suddenly, Red touched his fingers to his lips, and her voice came out meek. Winter backed away. She fell over, legs too exhausted to even work anymore.
"What are you going to do to me?" She spluttered, crawling backwards.
Red's voice was angelic. His wings were singing to her. Calling the name of their prey like a beautiful choir.
"I'm going to eat you," he said gently.
Even that awful declaration sounded sweet to her ears.
"I-is that it?"
Red knelt on the earth next to her. "Yes." Red's eyes glowed with lavishness. "Your mate begged and grovelled for your safety. And admittedly, that felt pretty good. Once I've eaten you, we will be even."
"What did you do to Tamer, Red?" She sobbed.
"I ate a good bit of him." Red winked. "But not enough to put me off desert. He'll live. His soul will be shattered when he awakes, but he'll live."
Winter began to hyperventilate. She was going to die. She was going to die, and she would break Tamer. Never in her life had she dreamed of things going this bad. Her hands trembled in the ice-cold dirt. Red knelt next to her.
"Red," she pleaded. "Five more minutes. Please. Five more minutes to weigh my options. To decide on what would hurt Tamer less."
"Are you actually considering being my soul debt?"
