The uneven gravel cut into the bottom of my bare feet as I stumbled along the cliff. A lightning bolt lit up the sky, jolting the earth underneath me. The rumble caused my feet to slip, and I fell onto my palms. I pulled my leather jacket tighter around my thin lilac sundress as I slowly stood. A fat raindrop fell from a grey cloud above and landed on top of my blood caked honey blond hair. Mascara was smeared down my cheeks, eyes freshly rimmed red from crying. After letting out a shaky sigh, I took a look at my surroundings.

The Hollywood sign perched on the cliff straight ahead towered imposingly over me by about forty feet and was thoroughly dusted with soot. Peering down at the city below, one might assume that it was just another rainy day in the city where dreams come true. If you got close enough, however, you would notice all the broken buildings and eerily silent streets. I was thoroughly confused. How did I get here?

“Hello?” I called out, voice hoarse from crying, begging to be heard. I took another deep breath and continued walking along the edge, nearing the sign. I sang softly to myself in an attempt for comfort. The dark grey clouds that covered the sun began to swirl in the distance, letting out a closer lightning bolt that tore open the sky, causing the scattered rain drops to turn into a steady mist.

I banged my fists on the front of the H in frustration, the noise drowned out by another thunderclap. All I wanted was to get out of this mess. I let out a piercing scream as a lightning bolt struck the D straight ahead, immediately setting it ablaze. Something in the distance shone, catching light from the fire. I ran toward it, my dress tearing on a rock on the way, with a glimmer of hope. As soon as I approached it, however, that hope quickly vanished. It was just a key on a silver chain tacked to the bottom of the second L. I lifted the chain, pulling it over my head as a necklace, and reached for the note underneath.

Welcome to the game, Nicole Tarshaw. I dare you.

Was all it said.
