Prologue—Platform 9 ¾

Autumn seemed to arrive suddenly that year.  At least Al thought so.

The whole summer was a blur, and now he was rolling his trunk through King’s Cross Station.  Since his older brother James started at Hogwarts, Al had been counting down the days until he turned eleven years old, and then the days to September 1st, the start of term.

Before he knew it, he’d crossed through the wall onto Platform 9 ¾ and was hugging Mum and Dad goodbye.  As he hugged his dad a fearful thought flashed across his mind and his excitement vanished momentarily.

“What if I’m in Slytherin?” he whispered, so that only his dad could hear him.

His father crouched down and looked his son in the eyes, the same color as his own.

“Albus Severus,” Harry said quietly, “you were named for two headmasters of Hogwarts.  One of them was a Slytherin and he was probably the bravest man I ever knew.”

“But just say—“

“—then Slytherin House will have gained an excellent student, won’t it?  It doesn’t matter to us, Al.  But if it matters to you, you’ll be able to choose Gryffindor over Slytherin.  The Sorting Hat takes your choice into account.

“Really?” asked Al, eyes wide.

“It did for me,” Harry confided.

Suddenly the doors were slamming all along the scarlet train.  Al gave his dad one last hug and jumped aboard, sitting in a compartment with his cousin Rose and brother James.  He looked around.  All the students were staring at his dad, a few were even pointing.

“Why are they all staring?” he asked Rose Weasley, who was sitting across from him.

His Uncle Ron overheard and called through the open window.  “Don’t let it worry you,” he said.  “It’s me, I’m extremely famous.”

Albus and Rose laughed.  The train gave a huge lurch and began to move down the tracks. Harry walked alongside it, smiling and waving.  The last thing Al saw before the train rounded a corner was his dad, rubbing the faded scar on his forehead and smiling.

Thank you so much for reading this! Also, thanks to JK Rowling for her amazing series, which was the obvious inspiration for this fan fiction.  We'd love to hear your feedback and what you'd like to happen at Hogwarts in the next few years. :)
