"Laura get up. You have to work today." My mom said.
"I don't want to go." I said as I lay looking at my ceiling.
"How long have you been up?"
"Six o' clock' in the morning." I smile.
"It's 7:55 now. You haven't moved for two hours?" My mom said.
"Nope." I laugh a little.
"Listen, Rick is going to be here any minute and I want you up before he gets here." She smiled.
"Mom. I don't like Rick." I say sitting up looking at her.
"Well. I don't care. I do. Unless he does some real bullshit, I don't want you saying that okay?" She said and sat down next to me.
"But mom. I just don't like the vibe I get from him. It's not like a raper kinda way but like a crazy kind of way. I just worry about you mom." I said and put my head on her shoulder.
"Why don't you want me to be happy mi amor?" She said while brushing through my hair.
"That's not what I mean mom. I love you and I do want what's best for you but I just don't feel right about Rick." I say looking at her and taking her hand in mine.
"Okay darling." She said. "How about this. Why don't you call up work say you're not feeling good and you've been throwing up since three in the morning, and if they still make you go in. Okay. But if they say you can take a day off, then me, you, and Rick will go downtown, and go shopping." She said.
"Okay mom. I will try to get along with him, but I don't want you to get hurt when I say this okay?" I said.
"Okay" She said kind of hesitantly.
"Rick, is not my dad, and no one will ever be my dad except my dad." I say.
"I understand that and I don't have a problem with it. But thank you for trying." She smiled. "Call your work mija." She urged me.
"Okay." I pick up my phone and dial Costco's manager Eric. He's only a couple years older than me but he's been working there since he was 15 so it all makes sense.
"Hello?" He answered.
"Hey Eric, it's Laura, I haven't been feeling good today, and I think I have food poisoning or something like that, but I'm going to the doctors office today." I say in the phone. My mother tapped me on the shoulder. I look at her and put the phone up to my chest so Eric wouldn't hear. She mouthed "I'm going to go wait for Rick. I'll be downstairs." I put up and okay sign and put the phone back to my ear.
"Hello? Laura, are you there?" I heard Eric say.
"Yeah, yeah, I'm here. I just needed to throw up so I put the phone on mute. What did you say?" I asked.
"Okay, well, take the day off today and I hope you feel better cause I need you in tomorrow to train a new one." he said.
"Okay sounds good. Thank you. Have a good day at work. I'll see you tomorrow." I say.
"You too sweet cheeks."
