Oh, my goodness, I can't hide it
You just smiled when you walked by me
Oh, my goodness, warning signs that no one showed me
Lost control but please don't hold me back
~Olly Murs, Oh My Goodness
The dull green of the frosted turf field only flattened Sophie's mood more. Soccer practices for the spring season had begun a few weeks ago and she ached for it warm up so that they might play on lush, grassy fields. She jogged over the best she could, her heavy soccer bag weighing her down, and joined her team for a warm up. They had done quite well in their fall season only suffering one loss. It was quite a feat considering the level they played at. Many competitive soccer clubs made up their teams with players from their own city (or areas of their city of they were largely populated) but her club was different. Players tried out from each of the cities so that only the best made it. Sophie definitely was not the best on her own team but she held her own in games and worked hard. Soccer was one of the few things in her life that helped maintain a sense of normalcy.
From afar Sophie could see a figure clad in a white and blue uniform in contrast to the green jerseyed players around him. So that’s the new guy Sophie mused. She snapped back to the present to join her team in a passing drill. She would get a better look later.
Drops of sweat lay scattered across Sophie's hand as she wiped the perspiration from her forehead. She reveled in the feeling after a good, hearty workout as she packed up her soccer gear. She slipped on a pair of grey sweats as she waved goodbye to her team. Her waving hand drifted to her hair where she let the stiff ponytail loose. Thickets of brown hair cascaded down her back.
Reaching her small, red car, Sophie made the decision to grab a muffin, to refuel, from the coffee shop down the road.
Silky chatter drifted about as the flock of girls dribbled through cones. Sophie, herself, was more of a listener and grew curious as the girls settled on one main topic: the new addition to the boy's team.
None of them were privy enough to know any details, or even his name, but those who had seen him agreed on one thing: he was attractive.
"Bye guys! See you tomorrow Tessa." Sophie exclaimed with a quick wave as she ventured over to her small car. It was nothing special just an old, slightly beaten up car that fulfilled its function of transporting Sophie. Her white car might be a bit of beater but it had heart.
Soccer practice had exhausted Sophie of her usually abundant energy which told her two things. One- she needed to limber up and get in shape for the oncoming season. Two- she needed some coffee. At the present time she couldn't do anything about the first but the coffee shop just down the road was calling her name.
The creamy white car revved to life with a slight hum as Sophie pulled out of her spot and drove over. Only a minute later was she stepping into the swiftly chilling night air and then pushing on the wooden handles of the door. The coffee shop was something of a treasure, nestled between buildings like an egg in a nest, and most people overlooked it.
The always comforting scent of coffee wafted through the air. Most of the shop was empty save for a couple cuddling in the corner, a woman furiously typing on her computer over a cup of tea, and a fit boy, also wearing a soccer uniform, ordering at the counter.
Newcomers were seldom to be found in the isolated coffee shop so out of curiosity and boredom Sophie listened in to the boy's order. "Can I have a chai tea latte and a dozen scones? To go please."
A dozen scones? That was peculiar. They boy's choice of a chai tea latte was good though. Sophie had one, on occasion, and it had been terrific. Coffee was her saving grace though. She was generally quiescent but mornings without coffee made Sophie quite a feisty, irritable spirit. Sometimes she bought tea but most of the time it was for Tessa if they were car-pooling to soccer.
