"You what?!?" I squealed as Rose and I scampered around the track. It was 10 o'clock on a crisp Thursday morning. The morning air was fresh and light with a slight breeze and a hint of spring in the wind. I loved Thursdays because of how normal they were; and yet they were so original too. Thursdays had no significance whatsoever during the week and that is why I loved them so much. Rose and I were running the track at top speed, determined, as usual, to beat each other to the finish line before the other.
"You heard me," Rose replied tentatively.
"This is so exciting! When did this start!?" I cried in her direction.
"Um...I don't know, maybe last week? Amanda, it's no big deal, it's not like I've never liked a guy before."
"But I know Cam! He's my friend, Rosie! Do you want me to talk to him? Can I?!"
In all honesty, I didn't really know why Rose liked Cam. He wasn't the cutest guy. He wasn't really smart or really athletic or even up to her standards. Rose fell for the perfect guys: the ones that shower her in love and will do everything for her. And that was so not Cam. I should know. He was my best guy friend after all.
"Whatever, Amanda. You do what you want. It's not like he would do anything anyway if he knew I liked him."
"Rose are you kidding me? You are insanely gorgeous, funny, and kind. I don't see how he wouldn't fall for you! You're perfect!" I countered. And it really was true. I was always so jealous of how beautiful Rose was, effortlessly. She could put on a shirt, pants, and a dash of makeup and look flawless. It hurt sometimes to know that she always looked so good.
"Girls pick up the pace or we'll be here until July!" Mr. Gennari bellowed from the bleachers. His voice carried off into the distance and a few boys far in front of me and Rose snickered.
"Hey Amanda don't worry about running any faster. You already hold the record of the slowest runner in the school anyway," said the dark-haired boy in front of me. I knew that voice: it was soft and gentle yet it had a twinge of maliciousness to it. Campbell.
"Oh you are so going to get it! Eat dirt douche bag!" I screamed as I sprinted at lightning speed in front of Cam and his friends. I was a fast runner and I knew I could outrun him. But as I flashed my head around I realized he was hot on my tail. I pushed my legs to the limit as I sprinted down the track, past Mr. Gennari and the rest of the kids who had finished running.
"Damn girl maybe you aren't the slowest," a voice heaved behind me. I whipped around just in time to prepare myself for Cam's attack. He jumped on top of me and we tumbled through the field laughing and breathing heavily. I finally shoved him off of me and screamed, "Who's the fastest runner now?"
"I let you win, Daley. We all know who the track star is at this school and he looks and sounds a lot like me," Cam retorted.
I cringed at his sudden boost of confidence. That wasn't my Cam. But I let out a laugh anyway. "Gosh Cam sometimes you are so full of yourself. Where did little innocent Campbell go?" I joked.
"Ah, Amanda, he fell in the toilet and went down the drain after you flushed him down with the rest of the shit," he spat.
But I chuckled anyway and playfully shoved his side just as Rose jogged over to us breathing heavily. She glanced up at Cam's dark eyes and a faint dusting of blush played upon her cheeks. Oh yeah, she had something for him.
And it was my job for that something to become something.
"Hey Cam I hear there's a new James Bond movie out. Oh, and Rosie's a fan too! Anyway, I have to get going." I shuffled past with a smirk playing on my lips and whispered, "Report back to me later, 007." And with that, I glided away with the feeling of achievement in my heart.
I joined the rest of my friends close to the school where the rest of our gym class had accumulated along with Cam and Rose. Pretending to be engrossed in Sarah's fascinating story about how her dog ran off for the thousandth time, I turned my attention to what was really important: the slowly forming romance of Rose and Cam.
Perfect.
I began to stare at Cam. Not creepily or anything but I started to notice how his nerdy glasses seemed to constantly slip down his tiny nose. When he was nervous he flipped his maple syrup hair around and smiled a little too much. This was my Cam and I was always so happy to say that he was close to me.
Cam was probably the nicest guy in our school. Every other guy was an ass hole anyway so it wasn't very hard to stand out in the crowd. Cam was probably the only guy who still held doors for girls, was polite in front of adults, and actually gave two shits about his grades. Trust me, I don't let very many guys close to me. They have to be at Cam's standards or even better for me to talk to them.
I just can't let any guy into my life. They have to mean something first. Sometimes we can't let everyone see who we truly are. Because then that means everyone knows our strengths and weaknesses. No one is special anymore then. Sometimes being more secretive is a good thing in order for others to feel truly important.
Suddenly, Mr. Genneri blew his whistle furiously and screamed, "Everyone get inside!" The guy looked like he was about to faint he was so scared. His face had gone tomato red and his eyes were practically popping out as he sounded the whistle more and more.
What the fu-
Oh my god.
