FOUR
I QUICKLY FOUND out that Aubrey was a machine.
The next morning, I was awoken by the noise of faint tapping. I rolled over in bed and almost fell out, having forgotten that I was now sleeping in a tiny twin-size. I gripped onto the headboard at the last minute and saved myself, glancing around our room in confusion.
It was still dark inside, no sunlight filtering through the crappy curtains. After squinting against the harsh glare of my phone, I found out that the time was 6am.
I let out a small groan, running my hand over my eyes tiredly. A small voice exclaimed "shit!" in surprise, after hearing my noise. I sat up abruptly, letting my eyes adjust to the darkness.
I finally found Aubrey stood by her bed, clad in a pair of grey cotton sweatpants and her pyjama shirt that said 'false advertisement' across her boobs. Her hair was scraped back in a tight bun and sweat shone on her forehead. "Hi" she waved at me from across the tiny space, blushing slightly.
"What are you doing?" I whispered, fully aware that it was incredibly early and I didn't want an angry horde of sleep-deprived girls descending upon me if I woke them up.
"I'm warming up" she gestured to the bright pink earbuds in her ear and the pointe shoes on her feet. These were the source of the tapping as she stretched out her legs and arms in sync.
"Oh, right" I nodded, fatigue taking over me again. Now that I knew the source of the noises, I felt as though I could fall back asleep easier. "Have fun."
"Will do" Aubrey nodded, a smirk creeping onto her face as I flopped back down into the warmth of my cocoon of blankets. It didn't take me too long to give back into the temptations of sleep.
The next time I woke up it was because of the warm sunlight filtering onto my face. Blinking a little, I yawned and stretched my arms out, accidentally smacking my wrist on the wall. Cursing a little, I propped myself up on my elbow and shook my messy hair out of my face. I was going to have to get used to how tiny our room was otherwise I'd have many more injuries in the next few days.
I turned my face to find Aubrey lounging on her bed, reading a book. When she sensed me stirring, she glanced over with a pleasant beam on her face. "Good morning" she greeted.
"Hey" I smiled back at her, throwing the bedcovers off of me. "How are you on this fine day?"
"I'm great" Aubrey giggled. "You on the other hand, look like death warmed over."
"Thanks" I grumbled, getting out of bed. I shuffled over to the bathroom and observed myself in the dingy mirror hanging on the tiled wall. I let out a wail of despair when I saw my reflection. My hair was a ratty bird's nest, eyes puffy and swollen and there was a little bit of dried drool from the corner of my lips.
"Ew" I rubbed it away quickly and washed my face in the sink, giving my teeth a brush straight after. Instantly feeling more refreshed, I headed back into our room to find Aubrey already dressed.
"You're keen" I commented, sitting on my desk chair and firing up my phone. I found two messages already, one from my Mom and the other quite surprisingly from Dane.
I opened my mother's first because obviously, that one was the one I'd initially been expecting.
Mom: hey sweetie, have a great day today. Love you! x
I sent back a short reply before opening up Dane's. We'd all exchanged numbers last night while lounging on the green outside of the diner. I felt a smile creep onto my face.
