My mother and father were arguing as usual.
Father, whom was tired of it all, let out a groan of annoyance. "Evangeline, no."
Mother, who never gave up, slammed her hands on the marble countertop. "Jonah, this is our chance. We can get better lives without it."
Another groan was heard from his mouth.
Father always hated fighting and cursing with my mother.
Mother would always find a way to start an argument with him.
I, on the other hand, kept my mouth shut and sketched flowers in the notebook Father gave me.
"JONAH, PLEASE!" Mother begged in a weary voice.
A sorrowful sigh was heard. "What shall I do with it?"
Mother let out a laugh that would put a madwoman to shame. "You kill Megara. Simple as that."
My whole world crashed down in a matter of seconds. All the sweet and happy memories of my eleven years living here were cast aside, just as I was about to be.
Being ever so careful, I opened my window and looked down. The tower was very tall. I could be killed climbing down the ivy that had grown on it.
I pushed back the fear and climbed down, ignoring the urge to vomit. As soon as my feet touched the damp ground, I ran for it.
The forest had dark magic in it, that I knew wasn't that dangerous. Only rhyming curses and unicorns that turn to snakes. Thankfully, if a noble is in the forest, they don't harm people.
My mother was born a duchess, but became a commoner after marrying my father, who was an owner of an inn. Being related to a past duchess kept me safe.
The border that divided the two kingdoms was nearing closer. Freedom was just at my fingertips.
I launched myself through it, nearly screaming in agony at the burning sensation.
This is where the story begins.
