Two huddled figures in cloaks stumbled through the pouring rain, each carrying a precious bundle.
The mother held a child wrapped in a blanket, a baby girl, close to her chest. The baby slept fitfully in her arms. The husband was clutching a book; a Magyk book, very rare. One of seven in the entire world.
Footsteps that were muffled by the mud were pounding behind them; their pursuers were not far behind.
"Just a little farther Sarah," Silas huffed, risking a look behind his shoulder, "The cottage isn't far now."
Sarah didn't respond, she merely traced her finger across the star necklace the baby wore. "Be safe, my child." She whispered.
They finally reached a small run down cottage in the middle of the forest.
"Hurry, Sarah!" Silas urged, as Sarah bent down to lay the baby on the steps in front of the cottage. Silas placed the book next to the baby then knocked rapidly in the door. He then quickly grabbed Sarah's hand, leading her, and their pursuers away from the scene.
Meanwhile the door creaked open, revealing an old lady as peered out. She was about to close the door but she Sensed a Magykal presence near. She glanced down as her breath hitched when she noticed the petite bundle.
At first she bent down and retrieved the book. She sighed as she flipped it to the back cover. "Oh Silas and Sarah Coven, what have you done?"
Then she examined the sleeping baby. Her star necklace had gotten flipped over, revealing a word etched on the back.
Sasha, Sasha Coven. From the Port Witch Coven. And not only that, but she was the leader, and she was only a baby!
Kayren bent down and scooped her up. "This isn't an orphanage; don't expect an easy life here." She murmured before taking the baby inside.
-12 years later-
"Focus, Sasha! That's your problem!" Kayren Coven yelled from the sidelines as I stood alone in the middle of the yard.
"I am focusing!" I yelled. "It's just hard! Let's see you Conjure up a tiger!
Kayren scoffed. "I already learned that eons ago. Now focus! Magyk isn't all chanting spells. And a true witch doesn't need a wand to perform her duties."
I rolled my eyes. "I know, I know."
I focused again. "But still," I muttered, "Wands sure help."
I centered my Energy and whispered the spell -the louder your voice is the bigger the item you're conjuring up is and I didn't want a big tiger in my backyard- and stuck out my hands. The star necklace I never took off began to vibrate and grow hot. When it reached an unbearable temperature, red Magyk shot out from my hands and formed the shape of a tiger, meanwhile I continued to whisper the spell. The tiger fully materialized and shook its tiny head and meowed.
I sighed and sat down. Larger spells like that took a lot of Energy, even though the tiger was as small as a kitten.
Kayren clapped. "Excellent! Not bad for a twelve year old."
I smiled modestly.
Kayren held her hand out for me to take and she led me to the kitchen. I sat down at the table while she started making us sandwiches for lunch.
I instinctively grabbed my Magyk book. I was never without it, just like my star necklace.
"Study," Kayren reminded me, "Leaders of the Port Witch Coven must be literate and smart. They must know every spell."
"I know." I sighed, swinging my feet. "But I don't like studying. It's so boooooring."
Kayren smiled and set two plates of sandwiches in front of us.
"I know, but don't think of it as studying, think of it as reading. You like reading, don't you?" I nodded quickly.
"Oh yes, reading isn't boring at all!" I loved reading. Sometimes I got in trouble for reading when I was supposed to be doing other things.
"Good. When we finish eating, shall we go back out and practice?" I nodded again; practicing was fun.
But about an hour into the session we stopped.
"Hear that?" Kayren whispered and I nodded, more than a little anxious. "Shall we listen for the Sound of A Human Heartbeat?" I nodded and reached for her hand. She took it as we set off into the woods.
"Grandma," I said after a while, "I think my Magyk's broken."
Kayren stopped. "What are you talking about dearest? You are the seventh daughter of the seventh daughter! You have an immeasurable amount of power, the most powerful of all witches! The one the prophecy spoke of! Of course your Magyk is not broken!"
I blushed and looked at the ground. "I wish you wouldn't talk about that Grandma, you know I don't believe in any of that. And I think it's broken because I can't hear the Sound of A Human Heartbeat.
Kayren stopped and listened hard. She took ahold of my hand again. "Don't worry, we'll find them. And someday you will come to accept your destiny, when the Time is Right." I just decided to humor her and I nodded.
Not too long later we stumbled across two young girls who looked to be my about age. Perhaps a year younger. Their heartbeats were very faint.
Kayren smiled. "Come over here, don't be shy." She led me closer and breathed a sigh of relief. "They live, hah, they live."
