Elsa's POV
"You will never be married! Never! For as long as I live!" screamed the matchmaker as I hurried out the door.
The matchmaker wasn't saying anything I didn't know. Somehow, I always knew this was how my meeting with the matchmaker was going to end.
The problem wasn't that I was ugly, because I wasn't. I have ice blue eyes and platinum blond hair. I'm not fat, or thin like a twig. I'm pretty much the perfect stereotypical girl. My only issue was that I was classified as a witch. Everyone thought there was something wrong with me, and nothing I did could convince them otherwise.
I made my way back home. As I walked by, everyone stared. Mother and father wouldn't be pleased. I was bringing shame on the whole family. I was the eldest. I was supposed to marry a rich man and being the family more honor. I was doing exactly the opposite.
When I got home, I quietly opened the door. My mom, dad, and sister Anna were all there.
"How did it go?" Anna asked. She was younger than me, and didn't need to meet the matchmaker for a few more years. It didn't matter anyway. There was already a boy who had fallen for her. His name was Kristoff. He came by occasionally to visit. Anna seemed oblivious to his feelings for her.
I couldn't meet their eyes. Instead I closed the door and hurried towards my room. I could feel their disappointment in me as they watched me leave.
I was never good enough. No matter what I did, it wasn't enough. My sister Anna was better than me. She was the perfect little girl my parents always wanted.
I cried myself to sleep that night.
---
The next day, the sound of horns filled the village. I hurried along with the rest of my family to the town square. A messenger from the Capitol was there, riding a black stallion. He opened a scroll and began reading.
"People of the Southern Province, our empire is in need of your aid! The Rhondians have risen up to destroy us! One male from every household is required to serve in the military!" the messenger called. I gasped in shock. War? My father was too injured for war! He had been badly injured in the last one.
I watched as several family names were called. Usually a son volunteered to take their father's place, but where no son was present the father of the family would accept the call to war. Kristoff was among those who took their father's place.
"Snow!" the messenger called, announcing my family name. My father stepped forward to accept the call.
"Father, you can't! You're injured!" I protested. My father shrugged my off angrily.
"Do not bring more shame upon this family," he growled. I released him and stepped back as he accepted the call. Anna had tears in her eyes.
"You would do well to teach your daughter manners," the messenger told my father. He nodded in reply.
Later that night, I lay in bed staring at the ceiling. Father couldn't go to war. He would be killed. But we had no other choice. A male from the family had to go to war, or we would be arrested for treason.
If only I had been born a boy instead of a girl. Father had always wanted a son. I had heard him and mother talking about it once. He said he would have called me Alexander. Alex for short. Instead I had been born a girl. A disappointment.
I sat up. This was my chance. My chance to save my father, be the son he always wanted me to be.
I snuck into the living room, where father's armor and sword were kept. I used the sword to cut off my braid and to make my hair shorter, more like a boy's. I put on the armor which was too big for me and strapped on the sword. I looked myself over. I looked a little like a boy, but it would have to be enough. I took my father's form for the army and snuck outside and into the cool night.
I had made up my mind. I was no longer Elsa Snow.
I was Alexander Snow.
