Elsa's POV
I opened my eyes slowly. I was in a clean room, lying on a bed. A bandage was wrapped around my stomach, restricting my movement somewhat.
I turned my head to the side, reluctant to stand. To my slight surprise, I realized that Jack was slumped in a chair by the wall.
I started to sit up, wincing as my stomach started to ache.
"Elsa!" Jack sputtered, jerking awake. I grinned as I watched him blink blearily. When our eyes met, he shot to his feet.
"Elsa! You're awake!" he said.
"Nah, you're just dreaming," I teased. Jack frowned.
"I hope not. In all my dreams I see you die, and I'm at your funeral," he told me.
"Did Thorn get away?" I asked.
"Don't bother yourself about traitors," Jack said. "You've earned your rest."
I raised an eyebrow, waiting for Jack to answer my question. He grinned.
"Yeah, we got him and the other traitors," he assured me.
"What did I miss while I was unconscious?" I asked.
"I sent Kristoff home, since he's officially off-duty now. General Hawk went back to church command the rest of the army. And you've been named an official hero by the Emperor," Jack listed.
"A hero," I repeated staring off into the distance. "I left home a mistake and I'm going home a hero. I am going home, right?"
"You gave it your best shot and had me scared for a good while, but yes. You'll be going home, if you still want to."
Did I want to? Going back would mean going back to my sister, Kristoff, my parents, and an engagement that I would probably never be happy with, even if it did happen.
"You really feel like you're a mistake, don't you?" Jack asked.
I lowered my eyes. Jack took my hands in his and waited until I met his eyes.
"You're not a mistake, ok?" Jack told me. "You're a hero. Don't ever let anyone tell you otherwise. Which reminds me, I believe I promised you something."
Jack knelt down beside the bed, still keeping hold of my hands.
"I love you, Elsa Snow," he told me. He released my hands and pulled out a diamond ring from his pocket. "Will you marry me? If you want to, that is. If it makes you happy."
"You want to marry me?" I asked. He nodded, hopeful expression turning more nervous.
"Of course I will!" I told him. "If you want to marry me."
"You kidding?" he laughed, standing. "I've been holding onto this ring for days waiting for you to wake up!"
"Looks like all your waiting paid off," I told him, smiling and feeling lighter than I had in a long time.
