I was so excited. I couldn’t believe I hadn’t thought of it before.
“Sam! You’re here right? Like with me? And I know how and when you’re gonna die!”
“Ok… So?”
“So, I can prevent you’re death! I can keep you away from roads and stuff so that you don’t die. Maybe you won’t die!”
“Yeah… yeah you’re right. You said I was going to die in a car accident right? All I have to do is just keep away from roads or something. But wait…”
“What? What’s wrong? But what?!?”
“Tomorrow is family day…”
“Oh yeah…”
Every year different families would come to see if they could adopt a child. Family day is when the child would spend a day with the family so that they could get to know each other. And Sam was one of those children. They would be picking her up at 9:00 in the morning and dropping her off at 9:00 at night. I wouldn’t be able to see her for twelve hours. Not good.
“We’ll work something out. We’ll tell them I’m your sister or something.”
“Mrs Pimberly will be there and she will know that you’re not my sister.”
“Don’t give me that look! We’ll work something out ok?”
“Ok. Are you done now? Cus its 1:30 and I want to sleep.”
“Yeah yeah, you can go to bed now. Good night.”
“Good night. Hey if I don’t get out of this, I just wanna say thank you for everything.”
“You can thank me day after tomorrow. Now go to sleep.”
But she was already snoring lightly. I turned over and slowly my eyes began to droop. Soon I was enveloped in darkness as sleep overcame me.
“AAAAHHHHH!!!!!!”
I woke up to the sound of…birds. Why on earth was I hearing birds?!? My eyes slowly adjusted to my surroundings. It was like I was in paradise. So many exotic, colourful birds and plants. Tall trees towered above me with shafts of sunlight streaming through the canopy of leaves. The gurgling sound of water could be heard along with the thunderous sound of a waterfall. It had to be a dream. I slowly got up and felt the warm earth beneath my feet. My toes curled up in the ground as I slowly took in the scenery. My legs starting moving on their own, as my eyes lapped in the beauty of the forest and quite suddenly, I bumped against a stone wall. I snapped back to my senses and rubbing my head hard, looked to see what had caused me the pain. I had bumped in to what seemed to be the wall of a big cave. Without hesitation, I walked right in. Stupid thing to do right? But for some reason, I trusted the place. It felt as though this place was too beautiful for anything wrong to happen.
Stalactites protruded out of the ceiling with points as sharp as knives. They were as beautiful as they were dangerous. Jade green and sparkling like diamonds, I had to use a lot of will power to fight of the urge to chip off a little bit to take with me. See, as much as I was sure that this was all a dream, I was hoping beyond hopes that it wasn’t because everything was just so beautiful. I continued to walk further into the heart of the cave. The further I walked in, the more sparkly the stalactites became. Then I finally reached it, the end of the cave. And there, right at the end, standing there and watching me with mild curiosity, was the most beautiful woman I had ever seen in my life. Her skin seemed to be emitting a faint golden glow as her long, silvery hair cascaded down to the ground. She was dressed in a simple, white dress yet, she looked breath-taking in it. Her eyes were a clear, pure blue like two crystals in a bed of white pearls. Just standing there in her glow and glory made me feel shameful as I looked down at the grime in my toenails with disgust.
“Roslyn, is it not? Long have I awaited you’re arrival. The girl who sees death. I’m sure you have long waited for an explanation on this matter. And I am here to give it to you.”
Her voice was as clear as a bell and there was something warm about it that made me trust her despite all common sense telling me to run away. It took a while for the words to sink in as I was still trying to decide if she was real or not.
“Huh? ... Oh, yeah I have been wondering. And I hope you’re going to tell me properly.”
“Basic manners first. My name is Eleanor and I am you’re guardian. I look over you. I feel you’re joy, sorrow and pain.”
“Oh yeah? Where have you been all my life huh? Never really there for me whenever I was going to die in the choker. Or when my parents died. Why are you suddenly here now?”
“I understand your rage. I have been watching over you although it may not have seemed so and now I am here to warn you of something I don’t fully understand. You are about to attempt something very dangerous am I right?”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about”
“You’re going to try and save her life right? Your friend Sam’s”
“Yeah. But how is that-“
“It is something that may result in catastrophic things if it goes wrong. It is an extremely dangerous expedition.”
“All I’m going to do is keep her off the road and-“
“No you do not understand. You will have to keep her alive for the whole day. She may not necessarily die in an accident. She could die in so many different ways. She could drown or fall from the 10th floor or something. But once she survives the day she’ll be reassigned to die on another day which is usually in a very late age. But should you fail, you may end up killing her and yourself.”
“Ok… so what’s the plan?”
“Plan? My dear, this is you’re challenge. You have to face it. I will assist you, of course, in any way that I can but this is your challenge that you have to face. I will give you one piece of advice though. Where there is death, there will always be death. With this I say farewell. Just remember to believe in me and more importantly in yourself. Not a word of this to Sam. Farewell dear child. Good luck and take care.”
And before I could reply she vanished and I felt this curious sensation like I was being sucked into a black hole. Then I woke up with a start, panting hard
