Sam
Arlington, Nebraska
I was just falling asleep when my dad came in through the front door, talking on the phone as usual with his brother, Alex.
"Daddy?" I said, rubbing the sleep from my eyes.
"Hey baby girl, what are you still doing up?" He asked, sitting on the couch next to me.
"Waiting for you to get home." I said.
"Why?" He asked.
"I know it's a little early, but I got you a present for your birthday." I said, handing him a small box.
"What's in it?" He asked.
"You have to open it to find out." I said. He opened it and pulled out a brand new hunting knife.
"I knew that yours was old and broken, so I decided to get you a new one." I said.
"Thanks baby girl, I love it, now come on, get to bed." He said, picking me up and putting me in bed. I woke up a few hours later to Alex calling my phone.
"Sam, Sam honey, I need you to get your dad on the phone, now its important." He said. I ran to my dads room and gave him the phone.
"Yeah....uh huh.....okay.....okay." He said.
"What is it daddy?" I asked.
"We have to get outside, now. Get your shoes on, we are leaving." He said, grabbing his 9mm pistol out of his drawer, and loading it with a clip.
"What's going on?" I asked.
"I dunno, but we're going to get out of here fast." He said. I got on my shoes and we went outside and waited for Alex to arrive. He came out of the car with a shotgun and raised it at us.
"Whoa, easy Alex, we don't want any trouble." My dad said.
"Duck!" He yelled. We dropped down and he fired. Hitting our neighbor, Jon and he fell.
"You just shot him." I said.
"Have you even been watching the news lately?" He asked.
"No, why?" I asked.
"There's some new disease, takes over the brain, does things to you, makes you go all cannibalistic, Jon here was about to take a bite out of you, so I did what had to be done: I put 'em down." Alex said. We hopped in his jeep which was jam packed with food and ammo, and guns.
"Here, grab two bags from the back, you're going to need those." He said. I grabbed a bag for my dad and for myself. My dad put a bunch of pistol ammo boxes into his bag and handed me a knife. I put it in the bag and just looked out into the distance: Helicopters and planes, military trucks and barricades.
"It looks like they're preparing for a war." I said.
"Yeah, but they don't know what they're up against, neither do we." Alex said. We continued driving out of the town when we were stopped by a military checkpoint.
"Everyone out." The soldier said. We got out and walked over to the soldiers.
"Look we don't want any trouble, we are just trying to get away from the infection, same as all the others." My dad said.
"Shut up and don't move." He said, scanning us. His scanner was silent as it passed over me and Alex, but when it got to my dad, it started beeping.
"We got an infected over here!" The soldier yelled. Alex pulled out his pistol and shot the soldier, shooting the two others too.
"Come on, I have to get you guys to a safe zone." He said, getting in the jeep.
"Ok, come on baby girl, let's go." My dad said, climbing back in the jeep. I got in the jeep and we drove past the checkpoint, out of town.
"Now, I know where a safe zone is, so when we get there, try and not look like you're infected, ok David?" Alex asked.
"Ok." My dad said. We drove to the safe zone where the military had helicopters everywhere loading people up and taking them away to somewhere else. We stopped the car and got out.
"Hold it right there, are you carrying any infected with you?" A soldier asked.
"No, we're not." Alex said.
"Let's let the dogs confirm that." He said. I looked over to Alex and he mouthed he didn't know there were any dogs. The dogs sniffed me and licked me. They sniffed Alex and walked away.
"No dog ever likes you." I said. The dog sniffed my dad and growled and started barking.
"We have an infected person over here!" The soldier yelled. The soldiers surrounded my dad and pointed their rifles at him. A soldier grabbed me and Uncle Alex and started to drag us away.
"Daddy!" I yelled. They loaded a clip into their guns and fired, gunning my dad down. They loaded us into a helicopter full of other people and we flew off towards a quarantine zone.
