Harry eyes bored into her hazel ones as a smirk appeared on his soft-looking face.
"Um...hi," she said timidly. "Harry, right?"
"In the flesh."
"You, um, needed something?" She asked looking at her white Converse.
"Do you fancy a walk around the school? I really don't know where I'm going. Could you show me the way?" His accent was thick and unmistakable.
She looked up at him through long eyelashes and simply nodded. With her book bag weighing on her shoulders, she led Harry out into the corridor and ventured right. She could hear his boots clacking on the tile floor a few steps behind her as they walked. As they toured the school, only one thought surged through Kylie's mind. Why me?
Harry's approach in class appalled her. It was unexpected. She didn't understand why someone like him would even dare to even speak to her. She only had one friend. Mia. She was invisible to everyone around her. Her teachers, her peers, and even, as bad as it may seem, her parents. She yearned for their love and acceptance. Sure, her mother and father loved her; they told her that every day. But something itched inside of her. A feeling of loneliness and disappointment. It was an itch she just couldn't scratch. Her parents barely spoke to her, as did her teachers.
The last heart-to heart personal discussion Kylie had with her mom was when she was twelve. When she started her period for the first time. No, it wasn't the most loving and exciting conversation but nonetheless, it was something. And Kylie wanted that again. She wanted her mothers nurturing. She missed her mom and the way she used to cradle young Kylie in her arms when she was upset or hurt. She even missed her father who was a massive workoholic. He only spoke to her once he got home from his job at the office. But their conversations were very seldom. All she wanted was her parents to notice her.
So it was a complete shock to Kylie when Harry advanced toward her in homeroom. And now, as they walked the desolate halls, she turned to face this mysterious boy."I have a question..."
"Yes, ma'am?"
"Why me?"
"What do you mean?" Harry asked furrowing his dark eyebrows.
"There were 23 other students in homeroom. Why did you ask me for help?" She knew how utterly idiotic and desperate she sounded but she was curious to know his answer.
"Why not?" He smirked revealing his deep dimple and walked past her. "You coming? You're supposed to lead the way, remember?" He chuckled and turned away. Kylie jogged in front of him and slowed to a stop as they arrived at a navy blue door. She heaved the door open and walked in. Harry stood back waiting.
"Harry...?"
He looked at her, dazed. "Hmm?"
Kylie motioned towards her signaling him to follow her. He stayed put."Why aren't you coming?" She asked, confused.
"Um..."
"Harry?" She grew worried. "Are you okay?"
Kylie noticed his hands shaking feverishly and noticed droplets of sweat line his brow. His cheeks turned white, the blood draining from his shadowed face.
"Harry?"
He didn't answer. Just stared ahead right through a now frightened Kylie. Soon, she noticed, he began to sway back and forth as if he was about to fall over and land on the cold floor. She reached out and grasped his arm to keep him steady. There was no denying the panic glowing from her round eyes. She called his name once again but he said nothing. Didn't even glance at her. Soon, his whole body began to tremble and his eyes darted back and forth rapidly.
Kylie frantically searched for a teacher. A student. Anybody that could provide help. There was no one in sight which she thought was peculiar. She turned her attention back to Harry as he continued his terrifying actions.
Seconds later, he ceased. Kylie looked up at him, her eyes showing sympathy."Harry...?" she whispered softly.
He looked down at her. His eyes glowed with intensity and ferocity. Kylie's heart vibrated against her ribs and her body tensed in fear. Then he smiled and her bones and muscles relaxed.
"What are you waiting for?" he asked as if nothing happened in that span of two minutes. "Come on! You're the one who's supposed to be showing me around." He chuckled and his deep voice sifted through the vacant hall and echoed as it traveled down the long corridor, bouncing back to them. She pointed at the door nervously."Um, let's go then, I guess..."
"Great," Harry said through his teeth while bouncing up and down on the heels of his feet obviously excited. Kylie noticed his fermented attitude and wondered why the hell he was so giddy. She opened the door, still confused, and Harry sauntered into the room with a certain confidence illuminated around him. She followed closely behind as the door slammed against the frame and they began their tour once again with no words exchanged between the two as they walked.
