SOPHIA

I wake up to a lemonade pink sun.
Anger grips my heart like a vice and I screech, taking one of my pillows into my hand and flinging it at the curtains.
It bumps dully against them, and I'm left sitting on my bed full of heavy breaths and restless fists.
"Sophia! Are you awake?" I hear a soft voice say, followed by a rap on my door.
For a moment I find myself ready to snap, to curse and scream like would be expected of me. But I can't find it in my heart to do so, for I know that voice.
"Yeah." I call out. "Did I miss breakfast?"
"You missed lunch." Caroline answers. She's the sweetest person I've ever known, my one true companion, and it kills me to have her only as a maid. She's also the youngest, only twenty five and trying at college. I sigh and scramble off my bed. I smooth down my silky nightgown and open the door.
Caroline stands before me with a pile of towels in one hand. She must've been walking by when she heard me scream.
"Did I really sleep that late?"
Caroline nods, and her brown eyes crinkle. She reaches out and touches my face in sympathy. I lean my head into her touch.
"I can't blame you, sweetheart." She murmurs. I try to remain strong, but I find my eyes tearing up and my head leaning towards her before I can stop myself. She makes kind whispers and wraps her free arm around me, bringing me into her chest where I let my tears drop free and breathe in her vanilla scented perfume.
I've known her for two years, and I'm closer to her than anyone else.
Even my mother.
After a few seconds she shushes me and pulls away lightly. "Honey, don't forget you've got dinner plans tonight." She reminds me.
I suck in a shaky breathe. After last night I feel that I have no strength to deal with them, and I'm about to ask Caroline to cover for me when she speaks again.
"You need some time out of the house." She tells me. "You need to get away from your mother, and your friends will distract you."
I begin to say something, but Caroline pushes her finger before my mouth.
"Hush, you know I'm right." She says.
I roll my eyes and back up a bit back into my room. She watches as my hand goes to the door and my eyes flicker back and forth. She must see the weariness inside of them, because she fixes her hold on the towels and backs up herself.
"I'll bring up some snack when your mother leaves the kitchen." She tells me, then walks away as I close the door.
I lean up against it and sigh.
Caroline is my only godsend.
