"Are you sure you have to go? " Marinette said looking away ever toes curling in shoes and her shoulders tense, Of course she already knew the answer.
"I'm sorry my little ladybug but I have to go, it's the opportunity of a lifetime!" Tom Dupain-Cheng's face lit up as he imagined all the new costumers he could lure to their simple little bakery shop. How much more profit the family could, all the possibilities of a better life for his poor little family.
Seeing her father so excited, Marinette tried hard to smile. But her father's journey to the city was dangerous, before he could even reach the city would have to pass the forest, and anything could hiding in the brush. Bandits, wild animals, or her father could fall of his horse and break a bone, or worse, and nobody would be there to help him. The list went on and on, and did nothing to calm Marinette's nerves.
"promise you will be safe, do not do anything rash, and be polite to strangers- but not too friendly" Marinette said looking over her father's a bags and horse, making sure everything was in place.
"I promise my little ladybug and I shall take be so successful in my travels I will also bring you anything you like back with me" Marinette's father said grinning the whole time.
"the greatest present will be your safe return"
"what did I do to deserve such a precious child?" Tom said, his eyes softening as he hugged his dough-ter (okay so that's supposed to be daughter but auto correct put dough, and I can't bring myself to change it) and saddled his horse, turning back to wave one last goodbye to his daughter and wife.
"he will be just fine" Marinette's mother said, giving the girl one last reassuring squeeze on her shoulder until she retreated back indoors.
"just fine" Marinette chanted to herself, her heart beating loudly in her ears and worry deep in her bones, "just fine"
"It has been two whole days without sight of your father, I bet he's dead in the forest with vultures picking out his eyes"
Marinette sent a sharp glare towards the girl sitting a safe distance away from her, "the journey to the city takes at least 2 days if anything I would worried if he was already back so soon"
"just keep telling yourself that, I know I an right, I am always right. Do you know why?" she paused to wait for Marinettes reaction, one that never came, "because my father is rich and didn't have to go barreling into the forest like a monkey just to get a few copper pieces and scrounge up a measly dowry for their poor little daughter"
Marinette sharply looked over at Chloé in her pink embroidered dress, sitting daintily under a umbrella next to Marinette for some God forsaken reason, "what do you mean dowry"
"my, my you really do not know do you? Well what can expect from a commoner, your parents could probably keep on living and making their way in the that little shack you call a bakery, but with a daughter they don't have any spare change to convince someone to marry their poor little daughter. While it's often the rich, like me of course, have very extravagant dowries amount the poor a few shillings will pass. But without a dowry a girl can not get married and then what good use are you? But then again you've always been a bit useless Marinette, haven't you? " Chloé said, a sneer in nearly every word.
"if I disgust you so, then why are you here in the village? Why not lounge in your grand castle your beautiful dresses and servants. Don't you have any friends? Maybe you should waste your breath and someone who cares, maybe your grand fiance, surely you have one? Your dowry is so large it has distraced all the respectable lords from your hideous personality, then again you wealthy don't marry out of love. You just go to the highest bidder" Marinette's sharp words cut through Chloé.
"you- you don't know anything, you horrid despicable- peasant !" Chloé stormed off shaking with rage, leaving Marinette to question why that girl was always so keen on bothering her. Her father was a duke, yet that girl always came to bother Marinette and meddle in her life.
"No matter" Marinette said as she brushed herself off and made her way back to her mother in their small little bakery. Chloé's mean words still embedded in Marinette's mind, digging deeper into Marinette's skull with every step she took home.
