“Cassie Lila Davies!” Liza called up the stairs.
“Wake up this instant! You’re going to be late for your first day back at school”.
I debated whether to roll over and ignore her or drag my sleepy self out of bed and have a shower. I debated this for a few minutes until i heard Liza clamber loudly up the stairs.
“Cassie!”
“Yeah, yeah! I’m up” I called back, yanking off the covers. Slowly i made my way towards my little bathroom connected to my room. I turned on the shower and hastily brushed my shoulder length curls before getting in. I let the warm water wake me up and thought about what today’s events may be. First day back at school, i thought, these holidays sure were eventful, but i had a feeling this year was going to be even bigger. Sighing deeply i got out of the shower and quickly began drying my hair. I let my hair fall freely around my face, pulled on a plain white tee, my favourite dark blue jeans and tennis shoes. I assessed myself briefly in the mirror before deciding to add same mascara to highlight my light blue eyes and some lip gloss to my full red lips. Satisfied, i made my way down toward the kitchen where i could smell the mouth-watering bacon sandwiches.
“Yum” i said once i reached the kitchen. Liza glanced at me before handing me a sandwich and began humming to herself, as she walked to her room to get ready for work. Liza worked at the local book store as one of the main managers. She always brought me home the latest books and i always read them in record time. I smiled and took my sandwich happily and sat at the table separating the kitchen and the lounge. As i chewed leisurely on my sandwich savouring the flavour, i noticed the time.
“Dammit!” scoffing down my sandwich i ran towards the front door and yelled, “Bye Liza!” before grabbing my grey hoodie and racing out the door. I ran across the street to where Derek parked his car, music blaring, and hoped in. Derek turned down the music and glowered at me.
“Jeez, took your time” he said sarcastically.
“I know, i woke up later than i thought” i apologised.
He snorted, started the car and pulled away from the curb. Even though we both got our licences last year and i had my own car, Derek always picked me up on the way to school. He loved his car, he called it ‘The Beater’ and he didn’t mind picking me up, so it became a routine. Even though I’ve only known Derek for about 3 years, we’re as close as if we’d grown up together. He has dark floppy hair, big grey eyes and a lean, tanned body. He also has the biggest passion for music. If he’s not in his car or in his room with his massive stereo, then he’s got his iPod in. I normally have to pull his ear buds out to get his attention. So on the way to school with the music blaring, talk was small. I liked it that way, and i honestly didn’t mind the music blaring. Derek listens to some real good “get your body moving” type music.
As we pulled into the Dalton High School parking lot we saw Lori almost straight away. Even though many kids were hanging around their cars and talking in small groups, a girl standing in an empty parking spot waving her arms around definitely stood out.
“Jeez” i sighed, “that girl has no shame”
Derek cast me a sideways glance and then looked back at Lori.
“I think it’s this cold weather, it’s probably freezing all her brain cells” He said seriously.
“What brain cells?” i asked as we pulled into the parking spot. He looked at me with an amused look on his face. I shot him a bright smile and got out of the car.
“What are you two smiling about? It’s bloody freezing!” exclaimed Lori.
“Nothing concerning you Lori” i said, giving her a hug. Lori’s been my best friend since pre-school. She’s a fair skinned, brown eyed girl, with blonde hair the colour of honey. She’s also one of those loud, outgoing girls with no shame; as you may have noticed.
“Hey Lori, how you liking the weather?” Derek asked looking down at Lori.
“Yeah, yeah” she said impatiently. “Can we please go inside? I’m freezing my butt off out here!” and began walking towards the building.
Derek and i looked at each other, smiled and followed Lori into the building.
