I am Crystal Rune, twelve years of age. My dad left my mom and i when i was only eight. I don't blame him for it though. Mom is an Alcoholic, and can't hold a job for more than two weeks. I just wish he had taken me with him. But i am still here. Every day i come home after school, my mother is either passed out or waiting to beat me, emotionally and physically. After I head to my room, I climb out the window and into the woods. no one ever goes in them, because of the stories that seem to be chained to the place. it is said that anyone who goes into the woods never comes out alive, and before you die you can hear the souls screaming. strangely enough, no one has ever bothered to name the forsaken place. I started acknowledging it as The Woods of Another Realm. but how about we get to the story now.
Plugging in my ear buds, i start on my walk home. School had been lame, again. I was what some would considered over average intelligence. i was skipped ahead to ninth grade because of my smartness. that was the first day my Mom had said he was proud of me. Though the way she said it felt like i lie. back to the point now. i hear someone faintly calling my name through the full volume of my music. I turn off my iPod, that my friend John had gotten , me for my birthday. speaking of John, guess who was calling me.
"Hey John what's up?" I greeted with a slight smile. John was my only friend, so i was always happy to see him.
"Crystal, hey!" John yelled, enveloping me in a huge hug. I Hugged him back awkwardly, not one much for physical contact. " Mind if i accompany you in the woods today?" John seemed a bit nervous. brushing it off i agreed and we kept walking towards my home. I did it so Mom would think i was home. but i really wasn't. I also wanted to grab the birthday present i had got for John.
We made small chat for about fifteen minutes until we reach my home. i told John to wait for me outside by the back. As I walked to the door i could have sworn i heard him say ' I'll always wait for you...' i just shrug it off and keep going. It's just my imagination, yeah. Stepping into the house i see my mom passed out on the couch. She most likely won't wake up until tomorrow with a massive hangover and then....... well hopefully i'll be at school before she wakes up. Slipping down the hall and into my room. My bed is made nicely and everything is put away accordingly. i grabbed the prettily wrapped box for my friend and set it on the bed.I didn't know what to get him for his fifteenth birthday so i had made him a black and yellow scarf, his favorite colors. i take out my textbooks, binders, and finished homework and set the objects on my old desk. i put the gift into my bag and then grab some other things. My notebook, some pencils, a flashlight, and pocket knife.
Climbing out the window ,I met John by the tall oak tree in our backyard area. though it was hard to tell where the backyard actually ended because there was no fence. But presumably it ended at the woods about Fifty feet away from the back of the house. "Here", i said handing his the silver wrapped gift, "happy birthday."
"Aw Crystal, you didn't have to get me anything," John said with a fake pout face.
"Whatever, just open it," i responded teasingly. "I just hope you like it."
John opened his present and ended up loving it. After some thank you's and your welcome's the pair set on there way.John and I walked past the first few trees that marked the border. but little did we know how doing so would screw up our peaceful walk.
