In his cricket academy that prospered in an area of west Delhi known for a hearty business culture rather than sports, Kohli stood out from the dozens of boys there. Even today, if one were to ask a Delhi resident about that part of western Delhi, they would instantly associate it not with enthusiastic sportsmen, but with speeding bikes and cars that play loud music as they zoom past.
But Virat was determined to chart different path. He not only showed early promise of great talent, but also a focus that was unusual cor someone of his age
'Virat was chubby and naughty, but very keen to play and stood out because of his energy,' remembers Sharma. 'He was different because he could play long innings even when he was very young, just nine or ten years old. He was very powerful,he could throw the ball from the boundary.'
Sharma was forthright as je explained to Virat's father Prem Kohli, that while Virat was promising, his older brother Vikas Kohli, who was also training with Sharma, did not possess an extraodinary talent.
Sharma was honest because he couls make out that Prem Kohli was not like the other parents who wanted to put their children imto cricket academies so that it shaves off some TV time, rather than hope that they make it big in the game.
'I leave it to you. You are like his father now and have to take care of him. Whatever you do will be best for him,' Sharma remembers Prem Kohli sayoing. The coach cannot forget the hope that sparkled in the father's eye.
'He was an easy-going and nice person. He always wanted Virat to play for the country, but unfortunately he died before he could see hid son play for India.'
