[**Sam’s POV**]
The rain splattered down on the windshield of the car as I drove. It was 3 am so there weren’t that many cars on the highway, and the few that were zoomed past me, trying hastily to reach their destination. Good. Life is too short for you to take your sweet time about it. You have to act quickly and try to do as much as you can before something happens that would snatch it all away from you.
I smiled to myself. I’ll probably be the person who would do the snatching.
The rain has stopped now, but the dark clouds in the sky clearly hint that the pause is only temporary. That’s okay with me. I like rain. The soft taps of it against my car windows is quite soothing.
I parked the car in front of what looked like a very old, abandoned hut. Getting out of my car, I quickly did a surveillance check of it: It was made out of a wood that was pale now, from being watered down by the rains of the past decades or so. The two windows were nailed shut, and the door was barely hanging on the hinges.
Yes, this is the perfect place to do some hush-hush work. I walked back into the car and took out the brief case that was lying on the passenger seat and headed towards the hut.
The smell of damp wood hit me first, making me scrunch up my nose in distaste. It would have been quite dark, if it were for the oil lamp hanging from a hook on the ceiling, making the inside of the hut filled with a pale yellow light.
In the corner of the room was a dark shadow. I acknowledged it with a slight nod and it moved towards me. As it came closer, it became more distinct instead of its former black shapeless form. I could see that it was now in a shape of a very thin person; a man from its tall height. He was wearing a hat and a long coat, with the collars turned up, attempting to hide his face as much as possible.
I would comment on his outfit but I had no room to talk; my clothing was as covering as his.
“Sam, I presume?” He said, his voice slightly muffled due to that scarf wrapped around his neck and face.
“Hermes.” I replied. Of course, in the privacy of this hut we could have used our real names instead of the codenames but paranoia made us be careful. It is necessary in our line of work.
“Have you got it?” he asked, wasting no time in making a small talk. Good, the more time we spend together, the more dangerous. It is crucial that I disappear fast.
“Yes.” I handed him the brief case I was holding.
He reached for it with gloved hands but I tightened my grip, “Should I even go there with what would happen if you open that gob of yours?”
Looking straight at me he said, “No.”
I nodded and let go of the case. As I started for the door, I was stopped with a question.
“What about the other one?”
Standing at the doorway, I slowly turned around to face him and simply said in a flat voice, “What about it?”
Not waiting for a reply of any sort, I walked out the hut. I got into my car and drove off, having no specific destination in my mind; only that I needed to disappear.
It had started raining again.
