Chapter One
It started out like any other day; I woke up, went downstairs, had breakfast and got ready for school. Mom was recovering from the hangover she got as a result from her usual late-night partying.
You see, my mom fell in love with my dad, they were very romantic and good to each other but one day he pushed her too far. A month or two later, she found out she was pregnant with me. My dad left her; said he was too busy with school to deal with a child. My mom was heartbroken; after I was born she started drinking, and disappearing and then showing up a week later. She was nineteen then. My father was twenty-one. I never got to meet him. She never even told me his name.
Just as I finished gobbling down my toast, I heard a car honk outside. It was my boyfriend, David. He picked me up in the morning to take me to school since I was only fourteen and couldn’t drive. He was two years older.
“Hey Danni,” He said and gave me a quick peck on the cheek as I got into the passenger seat.
My really close friends were the only ones who called me Danni. Everyone else called me by my real name: Jordan. My mom wanted me to be a boy, when she found out I was a girl she just called me Jordan anyways. She didn’t really give a damn.
“So, is the evil witch still knocked out?” Matt, David’s best friend asked me from the back seat. He was referring to my mom. All my friends knew we hated each other.
“Yeah, I wish she’d stay like that forever!” I replied.
“Who knows? It could happen one day.” Matt said. We listened to the radio for the rest of the ride. When we got to school, I told David where I’d meet him at lunch and said bye to Matt. As I was walking away I caught a glimpse of the blonde girl walking over to David.
“Hey Dave,” She said, attempting (and failing) to be sexy. David got it a lot though, being quite popular. Everyone respected him because he was really nicer (nicer than the other kids anyways) and smart. He didn’t do drugs or smoke or anything (that we knew of). Every single girl at our school, with a few exceptions, wanted him. So when he asked me, a freshman, out all those girls were pretty pissed. They’d been trying to steal him from me every since. Even though I knew he wouldn’t leave me for one of them, it still annoyed me.
“I wouldn’t worry about her too much; she’s too stupid for him. My best friend, Becca, fell into step beside me.
“Yeah, I know,” I replied while I stuffed my bag into my locker. Becca and I were lucky enough to have lockers right next to each other. This was good because I didn’t have any other friends that were my age.
We went to our first class and I almost fell asleep twice. Becca poked me with a pen just in time. The rest of our morning classes were boring. We went to our lockers to put our books away and then met David and Matt outside. We were walking to the local pizzeria for lunch. We all got our usual meals, which happened to all be different since two of us were vegetarians.
While we were eating Becca was flirting like mad with Matt. She liked him ever since I could remember and he knew but he didn’t like her back. Even David couldn’t figure out who the lucky girl was.
When we were done we started heading back to school. Becca and I said bye to the guys and went to get our books for our afternoon classes.

In happened in fourth period, the last period of the day. We had drama. Becca was in that class with me. We also had history and gym together.
Our teacher had just announced that we were doing improvisation. Becca and I were obviously going to be together. I didn’t want to talk to anyone else because I’m not a very sociable person.
We had to present in front of the class and I saw Becca turning a little green. I asked her if she was okay but she claimed that she had been feeling nauseous all morning. I left it at that.
Next thing I knew, it was our turn.
“You need to incorporate a mouse, a detective, and an old lady into your skit.” Our teacher told us. Becca and I were given five minutes to decide how we were going to do it, then we had to present.
“So, do you want to be the old lady or the detective?” I asked Becca.
“Um... Danni?” She said. I looked at her.
“Yes?”
“I think I’m going to be sick,” She said, “Like right now.” Then she flung the door open and ran to the girl’s bathroom. I got my teacher’s permission to go check on her and then I left too.
I found her in the very back stall, leaning over the toilet. I held her hair back while she threw up. When she had calmed down she told me I could go back to class and tell them that she was okay now. I asked her why she wasn’t coming too. She said she wanted to make herself look presentable.
“That’s actually a really good idea.” I said to her.
“Yeah, I probably look like crap, right?” She gave me a weak smile. I nodded then headed back to class.
I was halfway down the hallway when I heard footsteps, so I swiftly hid behind a garbage can.
It was Becca. She wasn’t walking back to class though; she was going to another classroom, at the opposite end of the hall. It was room 107, the grade eleven physics room. She knocked on the door and a minute later David came out.
Now, I bet you can imagine how confused I was at this point, but thing got even more confusing after that.
“Hey babe, what’s wrong?” David looked around him quickly and then kissed Becca. I felt my jaw drop but I managed not to make a sound.
“The whole puking thing, it started.” Her voice sounded shaky, almost as if she was scared.
“Really?” David asked.
“Dave, I’m not sure if I can do this, I’m still really young and everyone’s going to think I’m completely inappropriate.” She told him.
“Hey, we were both drunk, it was an accident, and in a way it was good because it made us realize that we have feelings for each other.” He gently caressed Becca’s cheek. He’d done that to me a thousand times before.
“I don’t know... maybe getting an abortion wouldn’t be so bad.”
“Don’t worry Becks; you’ll be a great mom. And I promise I won’t leave you.” Dave reassured her.
“Yeah, okay.” She smiled. “We don’t want our kid to end up like Danni!” They both burst into laughter while I tried to hold back tears.
I honestly could not believe it. Becca was pregnant. With my boyfriend. I ran back to class because I couldn’t stand them anymore.
They called my name, but I refused to even look back.
