Chapter Three
A New School and a Creepy Janitor
Ava elbowed her way into the back of Matt’s and squeezing her body in between Ty and Jay. She thought that it was a little unfair that the smallest person got to sit in the front seat. They had to drop Ben off at his middle school first, earning him shotgun. Good thing that she called it after he got out.
Ben got into the car and shot a dirty look at Ava. He still hasn’t warmed up to her. Ben shut the door with a hard slam and Matt threw the car into drive and made his was down the street. “Easy on my car Ben.”
Ben stared down at his feet “sorry.” He mumbled. Matt reached and ruffled his brothers’ hair and gave him a smile.
Ava sat wringing her hands in her lap. She worried about her first day of school. The year had started nearly a month ago. Everyone will have formed their circle of friends already making it hard for her to fit in. She did not want to be one of those people who sat alone at lunch.
She just hoped that the day went fast. After school she had a meeting set up with the soccer coach about joining the team. At her old school she was the starting center, she knew that she might not get that chance here but she still wanted to be a part of the team.
The car ride was loud and on every single turn Ty and Jay leaned into her, forcing all of the air out of her lungs. She had never been so thankful to get rid of Ben. As he got out she scrambled up into the safety of the front seat.
The closer they got to the school, the more nervous Ava got. The boys kept reassuring her that they would be there for her. They also told her the people who she should avoid. All the things they told her were wiped away as soon as she saw the school. It was at least three times the size of her old one. Thousands of teens were milling around the quad and even more were in the parking lot using the few minutes they had before class started to talk with their friends.
Matt pulled into an empty space and turned off to ignition. A group of boys with letterman jackets were sitting on top of the car next to them. Two girls were in the group also, Ava could see that they were practically throwing themselves at the guys that they were talking to. One of them looked up and met eyes with Ava. She quickly turned to her friend and whispered something in her ear.
“You ready Ava?” Ava turned towards Matt and nodded, she felt like she was going to throw up but it was now or never. Matt looked towards the group of boys at the next car, “those are Mine and Jay’s friends. They play football with us. Is it cool if we talk to them for a bit? They will like you, I promise.” Ava again nodded her head.
Jay stuck his head into the front of the car “And if they don’t be nice I’ll beat them up.” He gave a sly smile to Ava.
Ava laughed “thanks Jay.”
All four of them piled out of the car and were getting their bags out of the trunk when a blonde mass went flying at Matt. “Matti!” it shrieked as it latched itself onto him. It was one of the girls who was flirting with the boys at the car a minute ago. When she finally detached herself from Matt, she turned to Ava and gave her a look that a person would normally give to road kill. “Who’s this?” her nose wrinkled in disgust.
Jay came over and put his arm over Ava’s shoulders, “She’s the girl living with the Stephenson’s.” The girls’ face changed into an expression that Ava couldn’t read. “Oh! You’re the new foreign exchange student!” she bent down at the waist like she was talking to a child even though they were the same height. “Welcome to our country.” She enunciated slowly.
