The Horse

- Chapter One -

Lucy looked under the covers and saw a beautiful black figure. As it screeched and kicked the wall furiously, she jumped back frightened yet confused, slowly approaching back to the covers she lifted them up with a small tug. Seeing this beautiful horse this angry and hurt made her feel sick to her stomach.

She looked back at her grandpa and then at the clip board and read "Name: Tobias. Age: 6. Problem: abused. Being put down on July 7 2013."

Who could be this twisted and evil  to put a horse through this much pain? She wondered

"I want this one" she said almost shouting, causing the horse in the stall to jump and kick the wall again.

"No he's far to dangerous, we tried everything and he still wont respond to anything. No one has been able to get anywhere near close to saving him" said the man while flinching at the kick.

She looked at her grandpa pleadingly.

"We'll take him" she reached for the halter as her grandpa walked forward to help.

"Wait! You will need to get the trailer first." the man demanded almost at a scream.

She smiled as she looked back at her grandpa who was already leaving to get the truck and trailer.

* THE NEXT DAY *

Lucy grabbed an apple and took a bite while heading to the door. While slipping her boots on she saw Tobias running around the round pen.

"Calm down boy" she said calmly as she reached the pen.

As she headed to the barn she looked back to see Tobias running around frantically. She grabbed a broom and started sweeping the stalls and isle ways. Working through her chores she stopped to check on Tobias. He was spinning around the pen throwing dirt in the air with his hooves.

Looking at her watch she reads 11: 56 am. Lunch time. She thinks. As she reaches the house she runs inside, not bothering to take her boots off, she grabs a sandwich her grandpa made and returns to the barn as hes not looking.

She ran to the barn and tacked up Pal, her grandfather's horse, to go for a ride. She rememebered her grandfather asking her to ride Pal that today.

By the time she got back she realized that she spent 2 hours riding Pal. She brushed him down and brought him to the stall. She watched as he calmly went to his hay and started chewing, while slowly reaching to get a sip of water.

Grabbing a lead rope, she climbs into the pen. She started chasing Tobias around the pen. Then out of no where Tobias ran at her. Diving into the dirt on the other side of the pen Lucy got up and started brushing off her legs.

"Thanks bud, I've always meant to try dirt before." She murmured as Tobias pawed at the ground and swung his head around in a circle.

Lucy climbed over the gate and started towards the house. As she stepped in the door she kicked her boots off and went to the kitchen, finding her grandpa starting on dinner. Not realizing she spent another five and half hours doing chores and riding Pal, not.to mention chasing Tobias for nothing.

"How was Pal today?" Her grandpa asked.

"He was good, as usual."

"And Tobias?"

"And Tobias? Its only been a day. Give me a break okay?" She snapped.

"I take it that it didnt go well." He said offended.

"Yes, hes just so... stubborn." She said while stealing a piece of broccoli out of a pan.

"That makes a pair." He said loud enough for her to just hear.

"Hey, whats that supposed to mean, huh?" She snapped again.

"Nothing. How about you go get cleaned up, dinner will be in five." He said calmly.

"Okay." She agreed

As she comes back down stairs she finds dinner already sitting on the table with two places set.

"Thank you, for dinner." She says as she sits down.

"You have manners?" He says teasing her

"No, I learn everything from you." She says as she sticks her toungue out after finishing her sentence.

Dinner looked great. Broccoli with a cheese sauce with gravy covered chicken, mashed potatoes, and a small pile of sweet potatoes on the side of her plate.

After dinner she went upstairs to get ready for bed. Tomorrow was a big day. The first day of school. Lucy just finished grade 8 and was now in grade 9.

That night she lay in bed thinking.

Grade nine. Wow. School  starts tomorrow. Oh no, what about Tobias.
