Chapter 1

I watched the outside flash by as my dad sped up in the car we were on our way to California. Grandmother would be waiting in the ghost town called Inspire, it is honestly beautiful there. The only bad thing was any time something happened the whole town found out about it.

"We are here Paige," my dad said inhaling the new air. I took in a deep breath smelling the musty country smell. I opened the BMW's black door stepping out into the place I would now call home. I looked straight ahead at some small old fashioned buildings and then behind me a small park with a street light standing in the middle.

Since mom died me and my dad haven't talked much it has been tragic losing her to over dosage. The first week my dad stayed in his office while I cooked and cleaned. I didn't mind since I am now the woman of the house leaving certain responsibilities. Dad walked to the trunk grabbing my purple suit case packed with my personal belongings in it, he set it on the ground in front of me. We both stared down at it until he looked at me and said "We had to do this Paige, I'm sorry."

He had wrinkled eyes, his hair hadn't been brushed, and his clothes looked like he had been wearing them for a year. He didn't look like my dad at all he was usually well dressed and had perfect hazel eyes with short blonde hair. "It's fine dad I just have to get used to it,that's all." I said to sound reassuring I tried to smile but he could tell it was fake. "How about some ice cream?" My dad offered trying to sound cheery. "No thanks dad." I answered not wanting to go back into that car in which we had just made an awkward eight hour drive in.

After awhile in the middle of town grandma came in an old station wagon she has had since last time we visited, which was when I was in kindergarten. "How are you doing Paige?" She asked without even a nod to my dad. Since he left, him and grandma havn't talked and got into an argument about my mom but she knows we need her now. "I'm good I guess." Annoyed by her cheery voice. "Oh you poor thing." She said her voice not trying to sound cheerful. She stared into my sad eyes I tried to smile at her but she could still tell by my eyes that I didn't mean that smile. "We'll let's get your stuff into my SW." She said referring to her station wagon."

Chapter 2

We arrived at grandmas house a small blue cottage on a farm with nothing but grass and no animals or garden except a few wild flowers by a hammock. The drive way was a long gravel road with mossy trees on both sides, it was like entering a wonderland. The closest neighbors were only two-acres away.

We came to a stop in front of the large cottage the brakes screeching. I clicked open the door and put one foot out then the other standing up without knowing what my future would hold for me in this secluded town. I listened as grandma and dad arguing about something quietly behind the car, "She's only thirteen this is too dangerous for her to be staying here! You know the danger this place holds." It was my grandmother speaking in a hushed tone to my father. They both looked at me as I stared rudely at them, and tried acting casual again.

I looked away and walked to the back to get my suit case. "Let me help you with that Paige." My dad said walking over to me and grabbing the suit case from my small hands. He set it on the floor and took his out.

I had never actually been in this town we would stay in a rundown motel on the outskirts every time we visited. Inspire was a strange place because everyone knows everything about everyone even the people that are just moving in, which people hardly do. They know everything about me probably, I thought horrified. "Okay come right this way into the house," my granny told me like we were on a tour with those overly excited tour guides.

Chapter 3

After the short tour of the house I went to the room she said was mine. I climbed up the old creaky stairs into the small hallway. I opened the door and breathed in the moldy smell. As I stepped in I noticed the old fashion flowery wall paper, and the small bed next to the door. There was no windows on the back because it was all woods. Granny told me never to venture into the forest even if you have an adult. She always talks to me as I am a child. I love her but sometimes she can get irritating.

I unpacked my suitcase slowly remembering each memory with my mother. I faded back to when I was six and we were at a park, she was sitting by me and dad was sitting in front of us. I ran over to the tire swing mom chasing me and I jumped on feeling it toss me to-and fro. I felt like a bird with no limits flying and soaring over the pain and hateful world. My dream got interrupted by my tears flowing from my face and onto the old bed. It was the first time I thought back to those memories.

It was going to be hard living without my brown curly haired mom. Everybody says I look just like my mom, I also have the curly brown hair but much more curly. Me and mom used to joke about calling my hair the lions mane because in the morning it would be very poofy, as if it were a mane.

I wiped the tears from my wet cheeks onto my sleeve and then walked back down the stairs to follow the wonderful smell. It lead me into the kitchen where granny was cooking. "Are you hungry sweetie?" My granny asked in that tour guide voice again. "Yes." I answered.

I watched granny scoop some of the mushy oatmeal onto my plate and then set two pieces if bacon neatly on the side. "Why didn't you like mom?" I blurted out, I clasped my mouth with my hands wishing I could take it back. When I said this it made granny frown and she had a far off look. She smiled again and said "I never didn't like her." I knew it was a lie but I shook my head not wanting to go too far.

After breakfast I went back to my room. I walked in and wished there was a window to stare out into the woods. I picked up my favorite book and began reading it. After a while I found myself getting lost in thought and memories again.

Mom was standing there looking out the window watching me play outside, I turned to wave then continued chasing a butterfly. The next time I turned around and she wasn't there. I went back into the house, and then climbed the spiral stair case quickly and went into their room.

I saw my mom laying on the floor. I thought she was playing around with me so I laughed and ran to her. It was then that u saw a spilled bottle of pills. It was an orange bottle with a long word that I couldn't remember. I turned my mom on her back and saw a blank expression and she wasn't breathing. I awoke from my day dream shaking and crying, my dad came in and saw me, which made me cry worse. He walked over to my bad side and I put my face into his chest, he cradled me and felt my shaking body. He sat me back up straight and brushed my curly locks out of my eyes it was wet and it stuck to my face. We sat there for awhile and my dad finally spoke, "I know it is hard for you without her here but we can't stay hidden in this place grieving forever." I stared in his eyes still wrinkled and sleepless " I know it just seems like the easiest thing to do right now." I said between sobs. "Well how about we walk into town and grab a bite and go shopping." My dad bribed. "Okay dad," I answered not wanting to reject him. "You might want to change your shirt first." I joked looking at his tear stained shirt. He looked down and we both laughed, it was the first time I laughed since that day.

Chapter 4

We arrived in town it was very small with only a few old stores. When we walked into the store everyone got quiet, the only sound heard was the bell on the door. Everyone turned to stare then a few whispers were spoken. I realize dad is already ahead of me so I stumble to catch up,my face red from embarrassment if tripping over a nail.

We payed and quickly got away from the pointing fingers, and whispering accusations. On the way out a old lady that was blind grabbed my arm and whispered "Get away while you can." It sent a chill through my spine making me shake, luckily dad yanked me away and dragged me off to the car.

Chapter 4

"Dad what were you and granny talking about by the car yesterday?" I asked shyly. "Nothing hun don't worry." "Dad I'm not a baby please tell me." I said frustrated he was keeping things from me.
