Your mom gives you a Metrocard to take the subway home, just as you are coming around the corner to go down the stairs, you see maybe a dozen men wearing suits and holding briefcases walk straight down the subway you were going to take. On your right, a bus pulls up with a screech. You can use your Metrocard on the subway with mysterious suited briefcase holders, or to the bus that LOOKS completely safe.
