Scenario: You're an aspiring samurai who wants to do well and grow in your skills and strength. After having heard of the Shinsengumi, you seek them out for help with your training, but get lost along the way until he shows up to "save the day".
******
You had been wandering around the countryside, trying to find the Shinsengumi Headquarters. It was your desire to join their ranks, but you have a terrible sense of direction and soon became lost.
As you walk, you begin to grow worried. What if you couldn't find the place in time and it grew dark? You shudder at the very idea of being alone, in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by the cold and the bleak, night sky.
"Souji!" You hear footsteps and turn to see a young man moving swiftly towards you. He doesn't appear to notice that you are in his path until he practically barrels you over.
"Hey!" You shout angrily: both of you are sprawled out on the dirt road.
"What?" He rasps, then looks at you. "Oh, sorry." He goes to stand, but falls to one knee and begins to cough violently.
"Oh my gosh! Are you okay?" You move to help him, but he waves you off.
"I'm fine. Don't touch me, or I'll have to kill you."
You raise an eyebrow in amusement. "Kill me?"
"Yeah." The young man finally stops wheezing and takes a good, long, look at you.
"You're not from around here, are you?" He finally comments.
You shake your head. "No, I'm not. I'm actually looking for the Shinsengumi."
"Really? What for?" He sits on the ground and looks at you with new-found curiosity.
"I want to join them" you reply simply.
He stares at you for a moment, then begins to chuckle. "And what would you do if they refused you?"
You shrug. "Probably try to find someone else who'd take me on. I want to fight and grow stronger, but the only way I feel that can happen is by joining a clan."
He nods understandingly, then tells you that he knows where the Shinsengumi are and that he'd be willing to take you there. Delighted, you follow after him.
"So, what's your name?" You ask, trying to start up a conversation.
"Eh? And why do you care?" He asks, sending you an annoyed, sidelong glance.
You shrug again, undeterred by his callous attitude. "Just curious." The two of you continue to walk in silence.
"Souji Okita."
You jump at the sound of his voice. "What?"
"Hey! I already said it once; I'm not saying it again." You look up to see him blushing a bit and looking away. You giggle; he had at first appeared as a big jerk, but you could now tell that he was secretly a pretty nice guy.
After arriving and being welcomed in by the Shinsengumi, you discover that Okita-san is a captain and that he wasn't supposed to be walking around.
"Lucky I was though" he says pompously. "If I had stayed inside and done as I was told, then I wouldn't have found (y/n), now would I?"

A/N:
Keeping with the norm, Souji would be attempting to leave his sick-bed. And don't forget his famous "...or I'll kill you" line; it's what makes "him tough". Secretly, he'd have feelings for the girl, but would never show them up front, so that's why I gave the reader's character a more sister-like, best friend attitude.
She'd be worried about him all the time, but would also know when to back off and not always ask him how he was doing. The two of them would know each other's strengths and limits well, and would be able to read and understand each other with no words spoken.
