It's been three months since my high school graduation and I was beginning college the next day. I was excited but my parents were mostly mortified. All my life I have been by my parents side. They always believed I was "too good" for the common people.
My mother and father owned a large successful business company in Eco manufacturing and technologies. They've owned the company since I was born and since then, my life has basically been a breeze. They would always treat me like a child even though I am 18 years old. I couldn't go anywhere without their permission, I couldn't dress a certain way without their permission, I would always be driven to where ever I wanted to go. I didn't own have my own car until now.
"All they do is baby you. Are you going to live like this all your life?" My friends would say. I understand were they're coming from but I've never had a problem with how they raised me.
Now in less than 24 hours, I was going to be on my own. I am a mixture of nervous, anxious, and a bit scared. I just hope I don't run into anyone not worth my time. I walked downstairs from my room and into the kitchen where I met my parents. My mother was pouring herself orange juice and my father was reading a newspaper.
"Good Morning, Anna." My mother greeted. I did a quick smile at her that soon faded. I took a seat at the bar stool.
"Are you hungry?" She asked.
I pulled out my phone from my pocket and shook my head. There was an awkward silence. I could tell they were trying to hold back their sadness. That's what they always do when something caused them to feel uneasy. The kitchen grew dead silent except for the sound of my father flipping through his paper. Before I could say anything to break the silence our housekeeper, Carla entered the room.
"G'morning." She greeted.
"Good Morning." My parents said in unison. I didn't say anything.
Carla began wiping down the counter where I sat as she started humming quietly.
"So," She began "Are you excited about tomorrow, Anna?" She asked.
I looked over at my mother who pretended not to listen. Instead she drank her juice and looked another direction.
I shrugged my shoulders. "I guess. I am going to miss being here with you all."
"I know you're parents are going to miss you. So am I. You're growing up so quickly, Anna. Gonna be on your own." She moved over to the windows and started cleaning.
"Yeah.." I said dryly. Not being able to take anymore of this silence, I decided to retreat to my bedroom. My room was filled with my suitcases. It was as if I could just leave at this very moment. I secretly hated how my parents were being so antisocial but that's how they are. They always have to make everything a bigger deal than what it needs to be.
I decided to change out of my pajamas. I approached my closet and began to pick out something I would think my parents found suitable. My parents occasionally would check my closet to make sure I didn't buy anything worth turning a few heads. So that means no tank tops, short skirts, short shorts, mini dress, and DEFINITIVELY no belly shirts. The only thing that they would allow was skinny jeans and that's only because I begged enough. But no ripped jeans either.
"Me and your father works too hard to provide you with a lavish life. I'd be offended if you wasted money on something so...scantily." My mother once said. I was 15 at that time.
I picked out a pink floral blouse and white jeans. Instead of putting them on, I walked back down stairs and brought them to my father who was sitting on the couch watching football.
