Alessandra looked out of her bedroom window. To be fair, it wasn't really her fault being grounded. The count's idiot son deserved it.

"Why can't you just act like a normal mermaid for once?" he teased. "Every other girl out in this ocean can swim without knocking things over, and none of them devour their dinner like hungry sharks."
He was such a handsome merman. With curly, golden hair, that shone under sunlight. He was well developed, and tanned from his time on shore. If only his personality was just as nice. Alessandra gritted her teeth. She was about to open her mouth with a decent retort, when the bastard started up again.
"You're nineteen years old, the crown princess of Atlantis, and you can't keep from causing trouble in the court," he sneered, pulling back his lips and showing those pearly white teeth.
She turned to swim away, but he persisted on following her through the coral garden. "Your father would be ashamed of you if he could see you like this."
That did it. She turned around and smacked his perfect face with her tail. "What the--" he shrieked grabbing his cheek. In a rage, he blindly rushed at her, but she inched to the left in the nick of time, allowing him to crash into some nearby coral.
"Marius, dear," she sweetly called, "I suspect that coral will leave a few scratches. You might want to see the physician when you manage to get out of that mess. Have fun." She giggled as she turned to swim away, and bumped straight into her mother.
M-mom. Didn't see you there."
Giada was a tall, regal, and elegant woman, Alessandra had inherited her raven locks and piercing gaze. The difference between them was Alessandra's eyes were green, like her father's, and her mother's were a soft blue.
Flicking her royal (no pun intended) blue tail, back and forth, Alessandra gulped. Not a good sign.
"What, you see mom, what really happened, well," she began.
"Enough. Go and help him up."
"But mom," she whined.
"Now."
Alessandra slowly went to the sniveling fool known as Marius, and grabbing his rather muscled arm, she tugged on him till he had regained his balance again. Dusting her hands off, she started to leave again, when her mother said, "Uh, uh, uh."
Sighing, she called over her shoulder, "I'm sorry for causing you harm, Marius. Happy now, mother?"
"And?" she said calmly.
Alessandra let out a large breath of air, causing a bubble to float out, and slowly rise to the top of the ocean. She watched it as it popped, and wondered if humans had something similar to bubbles up above.
"I'm waiting," Marius said.
"And it won't happen again, you ungrateful little snot."
His cocky grin dropped. "Are you going to let her get away with that insult, Highness?"
This kid obviously didn't know when to quit. Alessandra growled, and snapped, "Actually, I didn't regret it at all. In fact, I can't wait for another opportunity to humiliate you." Her voice was reaching a higher pitch, and increased to the point of a shriek. She rushed towards Marius, getting right in front of his face. "In fact-
"That's enough!" Giada grabbed her arm, and dragged her all the way back to the palace.
"You are forbidden to leave your chamber until tomorrow night. I don't want to hear you or see you, or so help me Poseidon-" she stopped. "I'm not kidding this time. Your father and I have been too lenient. You are going to be Queen next winter. This can't go on any longer."
Her voice dropped to a whisper. "You have to grow up."
Alessandra couldn't take it anymore. Rushing up to her room, she bolted the door and flung herself upon her bed. Life wasn't fair. She didn't want to rule. She didn't want any of this

It was almost dinnertime, and her restriction was almost up. Her stomach growled, and she looked around for any spare jelly truffles. Her favorite; they were made from the jelly of a jellyfish. She reached for the box under the bed, pulled it out, and groaned in despair. Empty.
There was one way, but it went against her mother's orders. She really shouldn't -- and just then her stomach erupted into the largest battle cry she had ever heard. It was a sign. She went over to her barred window and took a deep breath.
In Atlantis, all of the windows are barred, so that the unwanted stuff can stay out, and the wanted stuff can stay in. But Alessandra had discovered something special about this particular window: if she tugged on one of the bars hard enough, it would come loose. A fact that had been incredibly handy on more than one occasion.
Grabbing the poster at the foot of her bed, and wrapping her iridescent emerald tail around the middle bar, she braced herself, and pulled. The bar came loose, and she set it down by the floor. Alessandra checked the coast, and then rushed down to the bottom of the palace. On a soft bed of sand, there was the kelp patch, which the chef used often his preparing his famous meals.
She plucked an armful, and rushed (as quickly as her tail would let her) up the tower wall, and slid through the bars of her window. Letting out a sigh of relief, she dumped the kelp on her bed, and turned to replace the bar, but-- it was gone.
"Looking for this?" Marius was leaning against her door, with a smile as wide as a shark's, holding the missing bar in his hands.
