The rain softly hit the small sunroof above me, creating speckles of shadow over my face. The moonlight streamed in through the small four panes of glass above my pillow, and as I lay there, I thought about what was soon to come.
My mother had received a letter saying that a family was moving in across the giant meadow we lived in, called The Meadow. It was on a peninsula, with the final side covered in a thicket of pine trees. The back and sides of our house looked out to see land stretch for a few miles, and then hit ocean. The beaches were exquisite, but the ride into town was boring. Half an hour by car, which meant I had to leave the house at 7:00 to get to school 15 minutes early. And the majority of the ride was in a forest, but at least my dad had paved a small cobblestone road before he left.
I closed my eyes and counted to ten. Breathing deeply, I instantly felt myself relaxing. Every time I think about my father, a painful memory sweeps all my other thoughts away. I opened my eyes again and continued staring at the moon. It was well past midnight by then, but I still wasn't tired. I rarely ever get tired, but I guess that's something passed down to me through genes from my father. Don't, I warned myself. I rolled over and tried again to fall asleep.I woke up to my rabbit, Buddy, trying to snuggle closer to my chest. I grinned and rolled off the left side of the bed, leaving Buddy to snuggle with my blankets. I trotted down the 6 steps to my bedroom door, which opened and closed silently. I stepped out into the living room, now on the third floor. Architecturally speaking, I slept in the attic, but it just felt like a continuation of the 3rd floor to me.
No one was up, which was normal, so I walked over to one of the kitchens and made myself breakfast. I rarely ever ate up there, because the dining room made up most the second floor and was easily accessible, so I silently descended to the landing. Looking around, I confirmed that no one else was awake. I walked down the final few steps to the dining room, slid into a chair, and ate peacefully. As soon as I was finished, I placed my now empty bowl of cereal into the sink of the main kitchen, which took up the last quarter of the second floor, and returned to my bedroom to get dressed. I grabbed my keys and headed down to the first floor. I slipped on my sneakers and quietly exited the house, heading towards our private stables. Unlocking the door, I slipped inside to check on the animals. I fed them, making sure they were alright before I headed to the back to check on the horses. My personal horse, Charcoal Blue, trotted up to the gate and nudged my hand, looking for his special treat. Laughing, I fed him his apple and sugar cubes. I decided to take him for a ride, since he hadn't been out in a week.
As we rode towards the house, I saw a strange structure in the distance. That must be the new house, I thought. Eager to see it, I rode towards it as fast as I could. The closer I got, the clearer it was, and the easier it was to see the progress of the construction. There was a first floor, and half of the second floor. I wrapped Charcoal Blue's reins around the fence and walked around the house. When I reached the back, I saw a nice-looking backyard surrounded by hedges. I saw an empty pool, and an open backdoor leading into the house. "It's not too bad. Well, it could be worse, anyway." I turned to see where the voice had come from, and saw a beautiful girl walking towards me from the other side of the house. She extended her hand. "Brooklyn Rodriguez, nice to meet you." I took her hand, shaking it and trying not to embarrass myself in front of her. "Jason Smithfeld, nice to meet you too. I live across The Meadow, I'm assuming you're part of the family that just moved in here?" She laughed, nodding. "Yeah, my parents are moving stuff around inside right now. I just came out here for a bath of fresh air; all this unpacking is wearing me out." I laughed with her, feeling slightly more at ease. She seems great, I thought to myself. I can't wait to get to know her better.A/N
