"So my entire life is just like... A lie" "I'm sorry, Taru... I didn't know when you were ready to know about all this, you had to learn the tough way." she seemed pretty disappointed with herself. "So what about Candice?" She looked as pale as I was and so mom began to explain "Candice is my real daughter, I thought that having another girl with you when you were growing up might be good for you, but Taru, you were made in a lab from the DNA of me and your father. We actually surgically removed a rib bone in each of our rib cages, you were made to be a 'key' to open, or close, whatever is needed for your journey." "Journey?!" "Yes, your father was the last generation guardian and he went on a journey he was made in a lab just like you. How they choose a guardian is the previous one finds love and the one in which they love is chosen to make the new guardian." Both me and my so called sister looked at her just shocked. "Look you guys need some rest," she sighed smiling "It's been a long day for you. Candice you go upstairs, Taru let me show you something." She takes my hand and brings me over to the open floor boards. "Taru I need to close this so that this won't be so obvious." She pulls at the boards and shows me that she can't do anything and she gestures me to place my hand on the boards. I did and suddenly I could feel this rush, almost like a waterfall of electricity saturating me. I find that this power is causing the floorboards to bend and go back to normal. I just sit there staring at the floorboards and then I just... Weep... What else could I do I fall into my mother's arms. I suppose she is my mother. I was made of her rib cage. I just cry in her arms until I fall asleep. I woke up in my bed. Was this all a dream? I get up and then I feel the pain from my scraped elbow. So it wasn't a dream, I see my mom bandaged the wound. I went down stairs to see the family, seeming normal. Like yesterday was just some distant dream. "How you feeling sweetie?" My dad turned in the office chair to face me. "Good...I guess..." "I know it's a lot to take in I felt the same way when I found out that I was a guardian. But I'm me again I lost my gem and now I'm normal." "Gems, journeys, weird people?" There is so much on my mind right now so I tell myself to treat this like a normal day. "Eat your cereal really quick we are gonna be late for school!" My mom shoved a bowl of cereal in front of me and grabbed her jacket and purse, I gulped down the cereal and ran out to the car. The car ride was very silent and I tried to make conversation. "Mom, so what happened yesterday, I guess I-" "Taru, you can't say anything about this, we can't have this spreading around. It could put you in danger" "But I-" "Taru promise me you won't tell anyone!" "Uh, yes...yes mom" I was going to tell my best friends because they were my best friends since I was born. Vincent only knew me in freshman year but he feels like someone I've known since I was a little baby. Bebe has always been very shy and so is FI, I guess that's what makes them such good friends. Brant is always bugging them but I guess that's what we love about him, he's always... buggin'. Andrew is just super athletic. That guy can run a mile in like 5 minutes! Emma is so tough, I swear, she is not afraid of anything! She is practically the opposite of Amy who is pretty much the fashionista drama queen, who screams at the sight of a slug. It's kinda funny though they all treat me like I'm such a baby. They are always treating me like I am their kid and I can't do anything on my own. EVEN BRANT WHO SKIPPED A GRADE AND IS YOUNGER THAN ME BY A YEAR. We went to school and did our day with the occasional leprechaun joke that wasn't even clever. Not much happened. After school some of us hang out by this one tree near the bathroom with just the right amount of shade and sunlight. We were all talking about stupid things when Fi started to talk about her father. To be fair her dad does have some issues, he isn't very nice to her and he spends all of his time watching tv and drinking beer. That's why Fi has us! We are always there for her. She began to speak about her parents argument the other day. "Sometimes I just wish that my dad was gone." "Fi, I know your going through some issues but I would rather have a dad with issues than no dad at all." Well you don't live with my dad, it's a lot harder than it seems." I was starting to get kind of frustrated. "You have no idea what it's like to live without a father!" "At least you didn't have to deal with the smell of beer polluting your house! I have to be my dad's slave" the tension grew as we screamed and yelled at each other about how one dad was worse or better than the other. "MY DAD HAS BEEN GONE FOR ALMOST 14 YEARS AND HE IS FINALLY BACK TODAY! THIS CREEPY MAN BROUGHT HIM BACK AND I FOUND OUT THAT I'M SOME WEIRD GUARDIAN AND-" I gasped, and was haunted be a rush of adrenaline up my spine and a fear in my heart. I looked at them with a thought that they would look disbelieving and confused but instead they looked kinda shocked. Brant whispered "So it's time." "Wait.. You know about this?! How the heck would you know about this?!" Emma began "We have been doing this for thousands of years." Emma motions over Amy and pulls down the back of her shirt to reveal a gem. "Thousands of years!? How?" "Well these gems are in each of us." Beebee chimes in "They are all meant to protect and guide the guardian on their quest so every one hundred years give or take these gems fill the person with memories of the journey and they are fused with the gem. Then when the purpose is filled they are put into a case to be used when the time is right" "We will still remember when the gems are gone. But this journey will be the only time we get to use the gems" Brant added "How come you guys never told me" "The caretaker of the guardian of the spirit gems has to tell you." Amy began "Your mother has chosen today." "She had to, a man came to our house and began attacking me and choking me." They all exchanged glanced and said "Nyx."
