A little boy rocked back and forth in the corner of his small room. It was cold and empty except for a dirty single bed and a solitary candle burning on an upturned cardboard box. The hard concrete walls and floor, were bone grey.
A knock on the thick metal door startled to boy and he quickly stood up and sat on the bed.
"It's open," the boy said meekly.
He was scared who was going to come through the door, but the fear disappeared when he saw who it was. The fear on his face disappareared and was replaced with a large smille as he jumped off the bed to hug the person who had entered.
"Kody! You're back! How was your holiday? Did you make any new friends?" he asked, jumping excitedly on the spot.
From behind his back, Kody brought out a dirty, green tennis ball and an old tennis racket.
"Happy Birthday Michael! You didn't think I'd forget did you? To answer your phone questions, excellent to the first one and no to the second one, but that's alright".
Kody beamed with happiness.
"Oh thank you so much Kody! Now you and I can play games together".
For the rest of the afternoon, Michael and Kody played with the tennis ball and racket.
That night Michael tossed and turned in his bed. Every night he had a reoccurring dream where he was chased by a black cloud, which resulted in him waking up screaming. The guard outside would open the peep hole on the door and tell Michael to be quiet, a routine that would repeat itself every night.
