Be hole, be dust, be dream, be wind.
Be night, be dark, be wish, be mind.
Now slip, now slide, now move unseen.
Above, beneath, betwixt, between."
Sarah shivered as she read the words once again. Oh, how she wished she could become invisible like the bold witch Liza! She willed herself to become concealed to the world, while repeating the verse over and over again in her mind.
And then it happened.
Sarah did know how she knew, but she just knew. She walked to the kitchen, feeling lighter than air, and waved a hand in front of her mother's face as she sat at the kitchen table. She did not flinch. "Hey mom," she crowed. Her mother did not react to this, instead muttering, "I better go check on Sarah."
Sarah giggled as her mom headed to the living room, only to see a book lying on the couch. Sarah giggled as she followed her mother throughout the house, as she anxiously cried, "Sarah?" In each room. Sarah chuckled as her mother headed outside in hopes of finding her there. It was only as her mother came inside, tears streaming down her eyes, that Sarah stopped laughing.
Sarah attempted to will herself back into visibility, but to no avail. She could only watch helplessly as her mother called the police and had them go look for her. But I'm right here! she thought.
She shyly walked into the kitchen once again, to find her mother solemnly staring at a mug of coffee. She teared up as she gazed at those cold, deadened, eyes. Then, Sarah lost it.
"I'm right here!" she cried, leaning closer to her mother's face. "Look at me, Mom! I'm right here, so please stop crying!" But she received no reply. She once again tried to will herself out of this nightmare, and when it failed to work, the horror set in that she was going to be like this forever. And with her will now broken and her hopes shattered, Sarah crouched under the table and began to cry, too.
