65 years ago, 2015 to be exact, powers didn't exist. They were just things that people digitally added to movies. But after a lab accident, they became possible. One afternoon, in the city of Chicago, a young lady, probably around her early 20's, was working on a science experiment. She was attempting to make a syrum that allows plants to grow five times faster. Everything was going fine until, as she was about to pour Calcium into the measuring cup, one of her lab partners tripped and fell on her, making her lose balance. She then bumped into the table, which was a host for the element Mercury. The Mercury ended up falling into the syrum and caused a lab explosion.
Everybody was later taken to the hospital. Don't worry, it turned out that nobody was effected by the chemicals.Well, at least not for another 5 years.
So, later on, that young girl ended up marrying her boyfriend and had a little girl named Maddilyn. When Maddilyn turned two, her mom noticed something "odd". Whenever the little girl touched a wall, she would literally fall through it. Her mom, who's name was Celena, was a Chemist and her dad was a nurse who worked in the lab at the doctor's office. Using this to their advantage, Madilyn's dad pricked her finger and took some blood. He then gave it to Celena, who ran some test on it. They later figured out that Maddilyn had a non-toxic bit of Mercury in her blood, which would explain why she had the ability to go through walls.
Celena and her husband decided to contact everybody else who was in the lab. It turned out that two of the other scientist had kids who also had Mercury in their blood. They decided to meet up and discuss what they were going to do about this situation. It was decided that the families would move out into the back country of the United States to try and get the children as far away as possible from any government facility.
After moving into the back country, the families lived out their lives like normal average people. The kids went to school and eventually learned how to control their powers. A few years passed and Maddilyn, along with the other kids, got married and had kids of their own. Maddilyn had twins. She named them Luna and Mason. Celena and her husband were worried that the twins would end up having powers like their mom. So, as a result, they took the twins and ran the same test as they did with Madilyn. When they got the results, no signs of Mercury were visible. This meant that they were not going to have powers.
Seeing as their was no reason for them to keep the kids isolated from the world, like Maddilyn was as a child, Celena let Maddilyn move back to Chicago. Her parents, at the beginning, came to visit at least once every two months just two make sure everything was fine. And when the twins turned two, their powers did not come in. Because of this, their grandparents decided two stop visiting as much and cut down the visits to two times a year. And the twins lived their lives normally.
Now, what happened to the other two kids? Well, they both ended getting married and also had kids of their own. One of the girls had a boy named Logan and the other had a girl named Skylar. Logan and Skylar actually ended up having Mercury in their blood like their parents.
When Celena heard about this, she told the kids' parents to hide them just as their parents did with them. And so they did. When Logan turned two, he inherited the powers of weather. When Skylar turned two, she inherited the powers of invisibility. They learned to control their powers, but they were later taken by the government.
Years passed, and Luna and Mason were about to turn 10, so their grandparents came to visit for their birthday. But when they got into a fight, something weird happened. As people gathered around them to sing happy birthday, the birthday cake exploded, the faucet exploded, and the ground started shaking. Worried, Celena took Luna out of the room and Maddilyn took Mason into another. After everything dialed down, they brought the twins back together. Nothing happened. Maddilyn thought it was just a freak accident, but Celena knew what had just happened and why.
Three years have now passed. Luna and Mason are now in eight grade. Luna has straight A's, is on her school's flag and drill team, in the yearbook club, and chorus. Mason also has straight A's, is on the school's football team, the technology club, and in the band. They are both in the school's NJHS (National Juniors Honor Society) and student council.
Tomorrow is a special day for them both. It is their 13th birthday! But it isn't just another birthday. For the first time, in three years, their grandparents are coming to visit! They don't know why they had not come and visited in so long, and everytime they asked their parents, they would change the subject. But it didn't matter, they were just happy to be able to see their grandparents again.
Earlier that same day, there were news about two kids who escaped from a secret government agency. When Celena found out, she rushed out to find Luna and Mason quick. When she arrived, Luna and Mason were super excited. After greeting them and giving them their early birthday gifts, Celena asked Maddilyn if she would step outside for a minute. Celena then told her about everything that had happened. She explained that when she heard about the escapes, she believed the twins were in danger. But not in danger of Logan and Skylar, but of another person. Eleanor Dare.
No one has seen Eleanor Dare since the lab incident. People said that she was so outraged at Celena, that she moved to another country. Nobody knows why she was outraged at her, but trust me, you do not want to question her.
"So what do we do, Mom?" asked Maddilyn, worried for her children.
"I don't know? Have they gotten their powers yet?" replied Celena.
"What? Why would they have powers?"
Celena didn't respond.
"Mom? Why would Luna and Mason have powers?" Maddilyn asked.
"Well, do you remember that incident on their 10th birthday?"
"Yeah. What about it?"
"Well, the reason everything went haywire was because they got mad. And since they didn't originally have Mercury in their blood-"
"Wait, what do you mean they didn't "originally have" Mercury in their blood?" Maddilyn asked.
"Well-"
"Mom stop saying "Well" so much!"
"Ok, it turns out that the twins, somehow, ended up inheriting the Mercury. And now they are probably going to have powers." Celena told her daughter, who was still trying to get the fact in her head.
"Wait, you said they "probably" will have powers. Could there be a chance that they will not inherit the powers?"
"Yeah. Since they got the Mercury so late, their powers might not even be real anymore."
"What if they are?"
"I guess we are going to have to find the runaways."
