After settling in, we heard a knock at the door. I looked out the window and saw the principle looking in.
"What did you do now?" I mouthed at Mason.
"I didn't do anything, thank you very much." he replied angrily.
"Ok I was just making sure."
Mrs. Lancaster walked over and opened the door.
"Good Morning Mrs. Grace. What brings you hear at this hour?" Mrs. Lancaster asked the principle.
"Well, I couldn't help, but come say Happy Birthday to two of my favorite students" she said looking at me and Mason.
"Thank you Mrs. Grace," I told her.
"No problem. Oh, I also have your new student, Mrs. Lancaster."
   "New student?" Mason asked.
"Oh yes. She was registered yesterday and that's why she is so late notice." Mrs. Grace responded.
"Skylar come in" Mrs. Grace callled the new girl.
The new girl came in. She looked around the room, worry on her face. Then she looked at me. We made eye contact and I got a weird feeling. It was as if she was trying to read my mind. Then she turned to Mason. She lookd at him with the same stare, as if we were guinea pigs that were being studied for an experiment.
After that awkward moment she turned to Mrs. Lancaster. Mrs. Lancaster then toook her behing her dsk and gave her a bunch of papers. She told her that she had to get them signed and returned by tomorrow. So, pretty much everything that happens on the first day of school. Then she was escorted to her desk. And, unfortunately, it was between me and my brother.
While our teacher talked with her, I took a closer look at her. She seemed to have dark brown hair with red highlights, hazel eyes and, a weird star shaped mark on her wrist.
Mason seemed to have done the same thing, because he signaled me to go to the back of the room. On my way there, he grabbed my arm and pulled me quickly to the wall.
"What do you want?" I asked, rubbing my hand form where he grabbed me.
   "That's her." he said.
   "What do you mean?"
   "That's the girl who escaped."
   "Escaped?"
   "Yeah from that government facility."
   "No it's not." I argued.
   "Yes it is!"
   "No it's not!"
   "Is too."
   "NOOO IT'SSS NOOOT!" I yelled.
Everybody stared at us. I guess I need to learn how to control my volume.
"Way to go sis," Mason told me.
"Ok I'm sorry for yelling. But it cannot be her. I mean if it were, then why wouldn't have anybody reported her already?"
   "So you believe me?"
   "No."
"Ok. You still don't believe me? Look at her closely."
If you asked me if Ithought my brother was paranoid, I would tell you "Yes." But to make him stop, I decided to look at the new girl.
All I could make out was that her hair was dark brown with red highlights. She also seemed to have hazel eyes and seemed about an inch or two taller then me. Then I saw something on her wrist.
At first, I thought it must have been a birthmark. But as I looked closer, I could see then silver lining around the star shaped mark. "Wait a minute, didn't one of the runaways have a star shaped mark on their wrist?" I thought to myself.
Oh My Goodness. My brother was right. The new girl Skylar was not just a new student. She was also one of the runaways.
"Mr. and Mrs. River, are you listening?," Mrs. Lancaster asked us.
   "Ma'am?" Mason replied.
The class snickered and Mrs. Grace told them to quite down.
"Mrs. Grace was telling you that she would like one of you to show Skylar around the school."
"Luna will do it." Mason blurted.
   "She will?"
   "I will?" I replied.
"Of course. I mean you just keep blabbing on about how you want to be a mentor, right? So this will be perfect practice. Don't you agree?" Mason said, a smirk lying across his face.
"Sure," I said through tight teeth.
"Well, thank you Luna," Mrs. Grace said.
   "No problem Mrs. Grace"
Mason and I made our way back to our Desks. Skylar was sitting next to us getting her stuff ready.
"So, where are you from?" I asked.
"Oh, I am from Toronto." She replied.
   "Sure." I thought.
   "Oh, nice." I said.
   "Yeah I guess." she replied.
"Did you like it up there?" I asked her, even though I knew it wasn't true.
"I did, it's just that all my family lives up there and I miss them."
"Well it will all be ok.
   "Ok If you say so."
"So, who is your 2nd period teacher?" I asked Skylar.
"Well, I don't know who the teacher is, but I do know what class. It's Coordinate Algebra."
"Oh! So you have Mr. Murzano. I have him too."
   "Cool."
A few classes passed and it was time for lunch. As usual, I went over to my friends and started unpacking. Mason then came over with a bunch of his friends. We all ate and laughed. At one point or another, Skylar came and joined us.
On our way out, the speakers came on. It spoke: "We need Luna and Mason River to the main office for an important message." Mason and I went up to the office. I was worried that we had done something.
When we got up there, I saw Mrs. Grace come out of her office. Behing was a figure. I couldn't really make out the figures face but I could see his or her wrist.
I looked at his wrist and saw the mark. It was in the shape of a lighting strike.  The shape was perfect.
The figure came towards me. I backed up, trying to get away from it. I tripped on Mason and fell on my back.
"Luna? Are you ok?" the figure asked me.
   "H-h-h-o-w-w d-do y-y-ou know m-m-y n-n-name?" I asked him, stuttering.
"Well, I need to know the name of my mentors.Right?"
   "Mentors?" I asked, confused.
"Yeah you and your brother, Mason. It is Mason, isn't it?" He asked.
"Yeah, you got it right." Mason answered.
I got up on my feet and brushed off the dust. Not recalling his name, I asked the figure."What's your name?"
"Logan. I just moved here. Well, I wouldn't need mentors if I wasn't new." he said, laughing.
Not finding anything being funny, I dismissed the statement. I talked with Mrs. Grace and headed out the door, Logan and Mason behind me. Why me? Why do I have to be his mentor? Couldn't Mason deal with him?
"Wait? Where's Skylar?" I thought to myself. I looked at the clock to see what time it was. 11:30 am. Lunch has been over for 20 minutes. How long was I in there?
I went back to the classroom, Logan and Mason by my side. We went inside and I introduced Logan to the teacher. I looked around for Skylar, but I couldn't see her. Huh. I thought she was in this class.
I asked the teacher if she was in this class and she said that she was. But she also said that she had not seen her. Strange.
All of a sudden a scream comes from no where. I looked around trying to see where it cam from. But, to my suprise, everybody was still. Even Mrs. Lizama.
I looked at Mason and Logan. I could tell that they had heard the scream too because Logan's eyes got really big and Mason was looking at me with the same face as I was giving him.
We asked Mrs. Lizama if we could go to the bathroom and she said yes. When we got out of the classroom, we heard the scream again. I looked at Logan and he looked at me. His eyes seemed to be changing from blue to gray and back from gray to blue.
"Where is that coming from?" I asked.
   "I don't know," Mason answered.
   "I do."
We turned to Logan. He looked forward and started running. Mason and I ran after him.
After a few seconds, Mason and I lost Logan. Man, that boy could run. We circled theschool a few times and still couldn't find Logan. Someone can't just disappear like that.
A few minutes passed and no screams were audiable. But Logan was still not back, 'nor was Skylar. Where were they? We started walking around and bumped into Roxanne.
Now, if you asked me, Roxanne is the meanest person you could ever meet. Her daddy owns the local mall, so you can expect that she is really rich. She used to be the nicest person ever, but one day something happened that changed her. Nobody knows what it was, but I wasm't planning on asking her.
"Watch where you're going, freak." she told me.
   "Why don't you?" I replied.
   "Guys, stop fighting," Mason interupted
"Oh, Mason I didn't notice you there," Roxanne said, turning red as a tomato.
"Ooh, look who has a crush on you Mason. Little Miss Popular."
   "No I don't."
"Yes you do. Why else would you be turnign red?"
   She didn't say a thing.
   "Exactly."
"I don't have time for your silly games, River." she replied.
   "Same to you."
"Come on Luna, we have to find Logan and Skylar." Mason said.
"Oh I wouldn't bother." Roxanne said.
   "Why not?" Mason asked.
"Because, even if you digged to the deepest parts of the Earth, you wouldn't be able to find them."
"What do you know?" I asked her.
"Oh, I just know that they're gone."
I was about to say something when the strangest thing happened. Roxanne was no longer human.
