The sunlight from the hole in the roof comes in and spreads across my face, which would be one of the most peaceful ways to wake up, if it were any other day than today. I turn over to my father’s bed hopefully, but then turn away. He still isn’t home.

I know he works in the mine overtime because he loves us. But that doesn’t make it any less unnerving. This is the kind of day I like to lay in bed and feel sorry for myself.

But I can’t today. Not on the reaping day, Then again no one can.

I pull myself out of bed and go over to my brother, Jacop. He’s still sleeping. I take care of him even though he is 5 years older than me. I don’t think he likes it, but I do it anyway. He’s so weak I wish he didn’t have to come. But if he doesn’t they will kill him. His condition and has only gotten worse. The healer says he won’t make it but I believe in him. He’s a fighter. I don’t know what I would have done without him when mom died. he was there for me and now I have to be there for him. I shake him gently and decide to let him sleep. I go downstairs to start the fire.

The room smells like my dad “which smells like ash.” I just can’t get him out of my head. This is the 3rd day in a row he hasn’t come home. But he has to be at the reaping. Right? I don’t know. If he doesn’t come home soon will starve. “My stomach growls” If I eat there won’t be anything for Jaycop. But I can eat later. Dad always has a treat for the reaping. I get out the last of the stale bread i found in the bakery trash and some moldy cheese and bring it up to Jacop. I place the food in his lap and shake him gently until he wakes.
