Recap:

"My point is...back off, okay? He's my boyfriend, not yours. And if I see you jump on him like that again, we're going to have a problem."

"Excuse me?" I manage to squeak out.

I'm freaking out. My heart is pounding, and I can feel myself shaking. I am horrible with confrontations. I mean, I freeze up and I have no clue what to say.

Lindsay flashes a smirk, turns around, and walks out of the kitchen.

And I'm left staring after her like an idiot with my mouth hanging open.

Did that really just happen?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm still standing in the kitchen minutes later when Cal walks in.

"What're you doing?" She asks, staring at me like I've grown a second head.

"I...will tell you later." I say, and walk back into the living room.

Lindsay's seated herself on Jason's lap, and she's playing with his hair while giggling.

It makes me nauseous.

"Oh, crap, Kate," Callie suddenly says.

"I left the front door open!" She tells me, looking horrified, "We have to go," she says to Jason.

"Oh. Okay." Jason says, and I can see that he doesn't want us to leave.

He gently moves Lindsay from his lap and stands up.

Lindsay gives him this look, like she can't believe he just moved her.

Jason walks over to me and hugs me, but for the first time in my life, I don't hug him back.

"We're going to have a problem."

Lindsay's words echo in my ears.

Jason pulls back and looks at me, puzzled.

I give him a weak smile, and we leave after Jason says goodbye to Cal.

After we get in the car, Callie asks, "Okay, what happened?"

" 'He's my boyfriend, not yours.' " I quote.

"Lindsay said that?"

"She also told me that if I didn't back off, we would have a problem."

Callie says absolutely nothing. But she doesn't start the car, she doesn't even move.

"You don't know how badly I want to walk back in that house and put her through the wall." Cal says eventually.

At a loss for words, I say nothing, I just sit there and wait for Callie to start driving.

She takes a breath, as if to calm herself, and drives off.

"I can't believe she had the....the nerve to say that! Seriously, who does she think she is!?" Cal rants, "If I were you, I would've poured my drink right down her bra!"

I make a noise out of my nose that slightly resembles a bull, not in the mood to actually laugh.

"You know, when you and Jason get married, can you invite her, just to be a b-"

"We're not getting married." I interupt.

"Yes you are."

"Cal, he's my best friend. He has no interest in someone like me. I mean, have you see the girls he's dated?"

"Yeah, they were all bitch-"

"Cal. His girlfriends were pretty, and...and popular. He wouldn't go for his loser best friend."

"Are you trying to tell me that you're not pretty?!" Callie shrieks.

I don't say anything.

"Kate. I wish I looked like you! You're gorgeous!"

"Thanks..." I mumble.

"And who cares about being popular?! I'm a loner and damn proud of it!"

That gets a smile out of me, but I'm still not getting my hopes up.

"I don't have half a chance with him." I say.

"You don't know that. Things could change."

"Doubt it." I mutter.

"Gosh, Katie, stop being so negative! You don't know what'll happen in the future."

"Like I said, Cal, I'll never have a chance with him."

Callie grins, looks over at me and says, "Never say never."
