As I reached the bottom of the stairs, I realized that I had no idea which room to go in.
"Pattie," I quietly called out, "I don't know, um, where to go..." I trailed off as Pattie came out of the room she has originally gone into when Ms. Vaan was still here.
Well, I guess I would've tried that room first.
"Oh, how silly of me! Of course you don't! Come, it's this way." She promptly spun on her heal, and pushed open the door again. I followed faintly behind her.
The kitchen was in there, just as I had originally thought, but the dining room was accessed by walking through the kitchen. The kitchen was much homier than I thought it would have been in a gloomy place like this.
There was a dining table directly past the doorway leading into the adjoined room. Sitting at it was four children. Sitting with their chairs pulled right up to the table, and their hands probably clasped together in their laps, they looked impatient. I smiled sheepishly to myself. I had kept them waiting.
As Pattie and I walked in, they all sat up straighter, and their eyes immediately found their way to me. I looked down at the ground, self-consciously. I was a bit uncomfortable from their stares, and unconsciously shied away, hiding myself slightly behind Pattie.
Pattie turned to me, shedding the slight sense of security I had felt when she had been shielding me. "These are the four kids I was telling you about. I'll let them introduce themselves to you." She then walked to a seat at the table, and sat down.
The first child to stand up was a perky-looking blonde haired, blue eyed child. She looked like an angel, with one of the cutest faces I had ever seen. My eyes softened, and a tiny smile graced my features. I had always loved kids.
She was wearing an innocent pink dress, with a white collar, and buttons running up the front. She held a white teddy bear clutched in her hands. It had a little red bow tie on, and a blue vest. I could see this was probably the little girl's most prized possession.
"My name is Suzie. I'm six. I go to first grade, and my teacher is Miss Lacker. And this is Luna." She held up the stuffed bear. I nodded my head slightly, and half-smiled at Suzie. She smiled brightly at me, shocking me with the wideness and whiteness of it. She had dimples, too. After her little speech, she scampered off back to her seat.
The second to introduce himself was a dark haired and dark eyed boy. He stood slowly, and shifted from foot to foot before he spoke. As he did he stared at the ground.
"My name is Roger. I'm 10." The tone of his voice alone made me feel awkward, so I was slightly relieved when he quietly sat back down.
The third one was busy reading a book. Roger gently elbowed her, and she snapped to attention. She remained sitting as he spoke.
"Hey! Sorry, I was at such a good part in my book, and I just had to know if Zane and Angelica were going to... Anyways, my name is Violet, and I really love reading, which you probably already figured out." She glanced back down towards to her book, but seemed to become glued to it again. Roger sighed, and elbowed Violet again. She looked back up at me. "Oh, and I'm 14." Then she resumed her reading. I could already tell she was a character.
The fourth one stayed sitting, his arms folded over his chest. He interested me the most. His blonde hair covered his eyes, so I couldn't see what color they were. I could see muscles through his thin T-shirt. He wasn't ripped, but I could tell he was definitely strong. And even though I couldn't see all of his face, I could tell he was handsome. Or, at least, most girls would think he was handsome. I didn't really care about that stuff.
