I stepped out of my house and couldn't help but shiver. I will never get used to this Chicago weather, I thought as I zipped my coat up to my chin. I've lived here my entire life, but I still don't get why it's fucking 30 degrees in the middle of May. Ok maybe it's a little warmer than that, but still too damn cold out here. I wasn't in the best of moods that day. My girlfriend had pissed me off the night before, homework had me up all night, and I'd left the house late. Not the best way to start off my Thursday. School put me under a lot of stress. I was always pressured, by my parents and teachers, to be next to perfect when it came to my education. I guess that's what I lived by; I HAD TO GET A SCHOLARSHIP! My parents weren't going to pay for my whole college tuition, so I had to do my part too.
But anyway, my morning wasn't going that great. I was walking to the train, and I got to the corner of my street. Suddenly, right as I was trying to cross the street, some random guy ran the red light and almost ran me over. There were other people around who saw it, but by the time anyone could say or do anything, he was already gone. It didn't make a difference to me though. I was too aggravated to care at the moment. I just kept walking to the train and hoped nothing else bad would happen that day.
When I finally got to the train I needed to add money to my bus pass, but there was a long ass line. Great. What next? I seriously don't have time for this. HURRY UP PEOPLE!!! I screamed in my head.
After that was all done, I had to run up to the platform to catch my train. I just barely made it. Lucky me. The ride was long as fuck but I managed to make it to school on time. I ran in the building, threw my bag and coat in my locker, and slipped into a seat in the back right as the bell ran. Skills, I thought. I was just starting to feel calm and satisfied with myself when...
"I'M HERE!!!" cried a high pitched voice from the door. My girlfriend, Jade, had arrived just moments after I did. At least I didn't pull such a stupid move and make my entrance so blatantly obvious.
"And you're late Ms. Henderson," our Advisory teacher said from the front.
"I know, I know. It's just that...well you know...I mean...ummmm..."
"Babe just sit down," I said trying to act like I wasn't already irritated with her.
"Please just take a seat. We'll discuss it after Morning Announcements," said our teacher. Told you.She sat, and we started our morning routine. By the time Advisory was over, we found out that we didn't have school that Friday, Jade had explained to the class why she was late, and we got our college report assignment. Hooray! More college shit. I was officially done with college, and I was only a freshman in high school. Imagine that.
Well, I left Advisory, and the day went by as normally as possible. Unfortunately for me, I still had a girlfriend to deal with.
"So we hanging out today babe?" she asked me as we walked down the stairs to the exit.
"I guess. Where you wanna go?"
"How bout Millennium Park?"
"We go there all the time," I said, trying my hardest not to let my anger at her cloud my better judgement; I was 5 seconds away from slapping her and then leaving.
"Ok. How 'bout Maggie Daley Park?"
"Sure. Whatever."
"Is there something you wanna say?"
You're a bitch. You screwed me over. You fucking around with your ex's. Am I missing anything? "No baby. Let's just go to the park," I said and put on the fakest of smiles. We walked to McDonald's to change out our school uniforms and then walked to the park. We sat on the swings in silence for a while until she said something.
"So, you gonna tell me what's wrong, or are you just gonna keep acting like a baby?"
I don't really feel like it but, "Do you really think it's ok for you to be fucking DJ and Ricky behind my back?"
Her face started to turn red. "What are you talking about?"
"Really?! You think I wouldn't find out? You know everyone tells me everything right?"
"Look, it wasn't even like that. I just-"
"Save it! It's over...and so are we. I can't take this anymore. I've known you've been doing this for the longest, but I just haven't said anything. But I'm done being by your side if you're not gonna be by mine. Take care Henderson," I said. And with that, I left her alone on the swing set.
