This was it! This was the first comic convention to reveal information about the first follow-up to Star Wars Episode VII. Rin could practically hear everyone's unspoken questions and desires as they waited in line for the panel.
'What happened to Kylo Ren?'
'Is Rey really Luke's daughter?'
'Please make Poe gay for Finn!'
'Who is Snoke?'
Rin loved the excitement in the air. It was like a drug, pumping everyone up until they were high enough to do impossible things. But the moment she entered the dark hall, the air turned somber. Instead of frenzied screams in anticipation of favorite actors, only the sound of nervous shuffling echoed off the walls. Every person Rin made eye contact with stared back with dread.
"Excuse me!" She tapped a Mandelorian cosplayer on the shoulder only to have them whip around and stick their gun to her chest.
"What do you want?" The person asked violently.
"Whoa!" Rin jumped back in surprise. "I just wanted to know what was going on. Everyone seems so... jumpy. And, I don't know... afraid? Paranoid?" She pushed the gun away for emphasis. "I mean, it's like everyone knows someone's about to be killed, but they don't know who."
"Can't you feel it? The darkness?"
"A little, but I suppose I'm a bit too used to it to be intimidated." The Mandelorian stared blankly at her, mouth open like they were about to respond. But before they could, the room went completely dark. A few screams let out, and they were far from happy. Uneasy, Rin used her phone screen as a flashlight.
"Is everyone okay? Who screamed?" She walked through the crowd until she found the culprit. A man, dressed in Finn's clothes, laid face down on the concrete floor. Rin's heart wrenched, but she didn't understand why. There was no sign of wound or broken limb, he was just motionless. Rin got on her knees and started to examine him.
"Does anyone know who he-" A sudden burning sensation above her head stopped her question. She looked up with hesitation to see the red blade of a lightsaber hovering over her. Silent, she backed up to get a better look at it's wielder.
Clothed in robes of black, the person stood tall over the crowd's quivering frames. Although his face was covered, the mask still made him recognizable. The metal bands around the eye holes were the same as the ones on the mask of Kylo Ren. But this couldn't be him standing in front of Rin, not really. Kylo Ren was, and always will be, a fictional character from a movie franchise. Yet, the way his saber flickered and sparked was all too real.
"On your knees." He commanded. Everyone around Rin immediately obeyed. She stayed standing, still frozen with confusion and fear.
'This isn't real.' She assured herself. 'I'm dreaming an elaborate fanfiction.' Kylo stepped closer to her, then turned away when a group of Stormtroopers marched in and barricaded the door. Rin held in a laugh. How was he so blind? Part of her wanted to yell 'I'm right here you blind dumbo!' Yet, she didn't want to press her luck. Instead she focused her attention on the dead person. Wait, he was still breathing. The shallow movements were barely detectable without light, but as Rin put her hand on his back, it was obvious.
"What's your name?" She whispered.
"Alex." The man coughed out an answer.
"That's a great name, I'm Rin. Don't move, I'm going for check for wounds." She moved her hands along his body, until she came to a hole near his shoulder. The singed skin around the area was still smoking. Rin gagged as she realised that the wound went all the way through.
