Her new life began in darkness. Coughing and gasping as she jolted awake from what felt like an eternity of uncomfortable sleep.

Dusty air filled her lungs, only causing the girl to cough even more; her throat stung like she had lost her voice from hours of screaming.

Pushing herself to her knee's and then to her feet, as the sound of metal grinding against metal filled the air and the floor beneath her lurched.

She fell from the force of the sudden movement, and stayed down, allowing her eyes to adjust to the darkness around her. She could not yet see things clearly, only vague shapes, and shuffled backwards until her back struck a cold metal wall. With another jolt, the floor moved upwards, like an old elevator in a mine shaft.

She closed her eyes, since she could not see anything anyway, and slid along the wall till she hit a corner. Pulling her knees, to her chest the girl waited, several more jerks later, a faint light suddenly filled her vision. She was in fact in what looked like an on mine shaft elevator, but she was the only human, and her only company was a couple of boxes, barrels, various bits of cloth and many other things.

The sound of chains and more grinding metal filled the air, and the elevator began moving continuously, as if it had finally decided it wanted to move. So she sat there, alone.

Every second felt like an eternity, but she knew it had barley been half an hour. The constant sound of  grinding metal, and the faint light was driving her insane. She stood up and banged on the sides of the elevator, but the metal wall stood strong, and only caused her hands and feet to sting.

Yelling in frustration , she ran her hand through her hair, pulling at it. It was thick and frizzy; and that was when she truly began to panic.

She didn't know who she was. Her mind functioned without flaw, facts, information and pictures flooded her thoughts, details of the world and how it worked. But who was she? She didn't know how she had gotten in the elevator, or anything of her life before she had woken up. Her mind searched desperately for anything, a name, a face, but nothing. She didn't know her own name, even what she looked like. As far as memories, her brain was completely empty.

She had given up trying to get out, the walls above her looked like they could open, but she had to jump to reach, and they would not budge; no matter how hard she pushed. The air was cool, she hadn't yet noticed, she was so focused on her amnesia. She was wearing a hooded jumper, when she noticed, she decided to pull it over her head; a couple of strands of hair falling into her face.

The room continued its assent, and the girl grew immune to the screeching sound of metal. To her surprise, her fear and panic were slowly washed away, replaced with the burning sensation of curiosity.

She wanted to now where she was and why she was here, who had sent her to this place and what was waiting for her at the top. With a groan, the chains stopped, and the box came to a halt. Then everything was silent. The girl new something was coming, that someone was at least going to open the box. Not knowing who or what was out there both scared the girl but spiked her curiosity. However she did not know if they were bad or good, so she decided to hide behind the barrels and boxes. Just as she had got in a safe position a loud CLANK rang above her, and a single line of light appeared at the ceiling and expanded, momentarily blinding her.

She sucked in a startled breath, and rubbed her stinging eyes, when her vision was no longer plagued by pure white, she managed to open her eyes slightly. Putting a hand above her face and and squinting. She heard noises, and so many voices, and someone jumped into the box.

He was a boy, and he was huge, not fat at all, just muscle, he only looked to be about 15 at most. The girl stared at him in shock, not knowing what to do. She watched as his face scrunched up in confusion.
"Guys" he yelled above him, where she could hear a dozen voices all talking at once. " I can't see the-" he stopped abruptly as his eyes landed on the girl. His eyes filling with shock.

'Well shit.' Was all she could think as the boy stared at her and she stared back, neither moving.

"Gally! What is it?"
"What do ya see?"
"Where's the Greenie?"

Questions was all that was audible from what and whoever was up there. The boy glanced up again,

"Gladers: we got ourselves something very different this month!"

She couldn't understand why the boy was looking at her like he was seeing an alien, like he had never seen a girl before but new all about them. He turned around and said something to the people above, but she didn't hear. She only focused on the fact that he was no longer paying attention to her, and that there was a way out. Springing out from behind her cover she jumped on a box and leaped onto the boy using him as a step. She pushed herself off him with all her strength, and leaped out.

She landed hard on grassy ground, grunting as she scrambled to her feet. She stood low, ready to fight off anything, but nothing came at her.

Her eyes had fully adjusted to the light, and all the smeared shapes around her turned into the body's of people. As she inspected them, she was surprised to find that they were all teenagers, some young some older, but there were no girls.

Her heart was racing in her chest, as the crowd stared at her in awe. Then the silence was broken by everyone of them exploding into voices.

"A girl?!"

"The freaking Greenies a girl!"

The fact that she was female  seemed an impossible thought to them. They began to move closer to her, which set off her panic again. She turned around and sprinted away.
