Frisk and Chara sat on a patch of grass along the base of a mountain, the view of city below. Small little cars zoomed past and waited to start and go again, busy to go do something Chara didn't know or care about and probably never would. Chara kind of paid attention and tore at the green grass springing to life beneath them. They shredded it and sprinkled it over the side of the cliff, then repeated. Their vision began to blur as the midday heat and comfort overtook them. Tossing a final clump of grass over, Chara laid their head back and stared into the cloudless sky above. Their eyes rolled over to Frisk, sitting by the edge of the cliff.

"Frisk?" Chara murmured, fighting to keep their eyes open.
"S O N D E R." Frisk turned and signed, their ever-present smile even wider than usual.
"Sonder." Chara muttered back. Frisk grinned, and scrambled back to lay with Chara in the grass. Unlike Chara, who was a bit too paranoid (about what, they weren't sure) to close their eyes, Frisk instantly let their eyes shut and sighed happily. "Sonder is... knowing everyone has a life all unique and individual on their own. Right?" Frisk didn't move, just barely nodded.

Chara pondered that for a moment. Sonder. Chara liked the way it sounded. It sounded... mature. They let their eyes fall a bit more as the sun pulled a blanket of warmth over them.
Sonder. The realization that each random passerby is living a life as vivid and complex as your own. The word didn't necesarrily mean much to them - why, though? A small hint of a frown began to sneak onto their face - but before Chara could finish, sleep smothered them.

Now, the sun had lowered, and darkness slowly began to take over the light.
Chara's eyes popped open for a second, and they gazed at the sunset. They found themselves entranced in it - probably because they were still tired - until they saw Frisk beside them, standing up. Frisk seemed to notice Chara's stirring. They turned, smiling wide, their eyes ablaze with excitement.
"Don't go leaving me," Chara muttered, rubbing their eyes. "And... what's got you so riled up?" The warmth of the sun had vanished, leaving behind a chilly breeze that stuck to Chara's clothes and gave them goosebumps. Frisk didn't seem to mind - and grabbed Chara's arm, pulling them forward into who knows where.
"Hey! Wait! Where are we going?" Chara asked, the breath ripped out of their body. Frisk didn't reply - didn't even sign or gesticulate - and continued dashing forward, then up.

"We're going up the mountain? Why?" Chara asked, though she didn't really expect a reply. Before long, Chara's legs began to ache. Frisk hadn't let go of their hand, and soon that began to hurt too. Finally, when they reached the top of the mountain, Frisk let go so suddenly they left Chara stumbling.
"What? What is this? Why did you bring me here?" Chara huffed. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary. It was a simple hole in a big pile of dirt, with piles of gnarly vines wrapping all about.

"I wanted to show you," Frisk signed. "It's pretty."  Looks like a hole in the dirt to me, Chara almost said. They instead nodded simply. Gazing downward, Chara tried to see into the darkness.
"How far down you think it goes?" Chara muttered, sticking her head a bit into the hole. Frisk gasped and rushed to pull Chara back.
"Careful!" Frisk signed, their hands trembling and face nervous.
"Pshhh! Calm down. I'm not as clumsy as you," Chara grinned, returning to look into whatever lied below. Frisk nervously shifted from one foot to the other, looking from a safe distance. Chara rolled their eyes. "Oh, c'mon, you big crybaby. It's fine." Chara waved Frisk over, first excitedly - then, more relaxed, as they noticed the anxiety in Frisk's eyes. Frisk slowly edged over, sat down next to Chara, and looked over the edge... just a bit. They squinted and shrugged, as if saying I don't see anything.

"Whaddya think is down there?" Chara grinned wildly. Frisk took the posture of sighing. Chara was having another crazy, daring idea. "Wanna check?" Frisk shook their head so hard their hair flailed and hit them in the face.
"Chill! I'm not gonna actually do it... unless I find a way to," Chara murmured. Frisk sat back and shook their head.
"I wanted you to see this," Frisk signed. "Not jump down a hole. But what else would I expect from you?" Frisk smiled lazily. "Let's just lay here."

"Fine." Chara exhaled, and laid their head back in the grass. They heard a strange voice calling to them. "Chara." It couldn't have been Frisk. Chara still checked anyway. They seemed near asleep - the sun adding to their freckles and tanning their bronzed face. A small breeze atop the mountain ruffled their hair and sweater. They breathed in the fresh scent of golden flowers steadily. It was enough to ensure Chara that everything was fine, they were just losing their mind, when the voice spoke again. It's voice was harsher, angrier, now. It... almost sounded like them? Chara felt a chill run down their spine.

"Shut up, head," Chara whispered, careful not to wake Frisk. "I'm trying to take a nap here."
Push them.
Chara froze.
Push Frisk.
Chara's breathing went unsteady. She sat up. "No," she whispered. "Go away." The voice remained silent, as if bored.
Go on.
"No, I..." Chara gulped. Their hands suddenly fell numb. The feeling traveled up their goosebump-covered arms and strangled them with dizziness. "I... can't." Chara struggled to their feet. "Fr... Frisk! Wake u..." They lost all control in their body.

help me
im sorry
i can t do any th i n g

Those were the final fleeting thoughts through Chara's head as they witnessed their body stand up, and gently toss Frisk in. Shortly, after, all they felt was cold and wind ripping at their skin as they, too, jumped.
Or... whoever they were.
