As we walked out of our last class before lunch, algebra, we were arguing back and forth.

“There is absolutely positively no possible way!” Jason exclaimed.

“Well obviously there is because it is happening right now!! So believe it, deal with it, and love it. But if you’re not gonna love it, then your gonna have to suck it! So ha!” Hailey retorted with a hair flip. She flounced off towards our table as Jason and I got into the lunch line.

“She’s kinda right you know. It is happening.” I said after a moment.

“No! There is no way we are going to a Ke$ha concert over a Lil Wayne concert!” Jason whined.

“Jason you have to know by now that you are fighting a losing battle.  You will never win in a fight against me and Hailey so just give up already. If not for your friendship then for my birthday. Please?” I begged as I gave him my puppy eyes.

Jason sighed and shifted his weight.

“You do realize that I gave you the most awesome birthday present ever right?”

“Yes.”

“But you are still going to torture me with horrible auto tune and annoying lyrics and lots of glitter?”

“Yup” I said, popping the P.

“Fine” Jason said with a sigh. “But you owe me big-time for this!”

“We’ll see.” I said with a grin. That had been easier than I thought it would. I had expected a long fight ending in me forcing them to make up or having to go to the concert without Jason. And that would not have been good, because Jason was the only one out of us three that had a car. If he didn’t come, one of our parents would have had to drop us off. And that would have been extremely awkward, not to mention embarrassing.

As we grabbed our trays, I eyed the cafeteria food. Or maybe the cafeteria slop would have been a better word to use. Whatever it was, it looked downright nasty. According to the board hung on the wall, it was supposed to be some kind of casserole. Well it looked a lot less like casserole and a lot more like something found in your yard after your dog eats something it’s not supposed to. I looked at my other options, a salad with wilted lettuce and week old chicken,  a burger that had most likely been frozen and only halfway thawed, or my choice of a tuna, turkey and cheese, or ham and cheese wrap.  I chose a turkey and cheese wrap and grabbed a water bottle, a roll, and a bag of Doritos. I slid my tray along the counter towards the register. I paid and grabbed some napkins and utensils as I waited for Jason to stop talking to his friend Sam and pay. Although Sam and I were both friends with Jason, we had never spoken to each other. This was probably because Sam was the schools golden boy. He had perfect grades, was amazing in every sport, and he wasn’t stuck-up. He was nice to everyone. All the teachers loved him. He wasn’t a player as you would expect, and he was friends with lots of people, not just jocks and cheerleaders. The only reason we hadn’t spoken was because he never noticed me. He wasn’t rude; he just didn’t know that I existed. Once Jason was done talking and paying, we walked towards our table. I slid in next to Hailey and Jason sat across from us.

“Guess what!” I said to Hailey, trying hard to contain my excitement.

“You are about to eat an animal that was murdered, processed, and chopped up then placed on a wrap for your own selfish needs?” Hailey replied while eyeing my lunch with disdain.  Hailey was a vegetarian; she absolutely hated the idea of eating something that was once living. She brought her own lunch from home, and it usually consisted of something made of tofu. I tried it once when I slept over her house, and I threw up immediately after. Thank god her parents weren’t also vegetarians, or I probably would have never gone over her house again.
