My parents have a late start to work so it's a little hard to sneak away. I go to their bedroom where they are sleeping and say that I have early morning Computer Club. They half-awake nod and I head next door to Rachel's.
We walk to school again, but this time we kind of run too because it's 6:38 and I know as a fact Mr. Devon gets to school at 6:50.
When we walk through the middle school entrance, Rachel goes up to the main office and asks the lady, "Is Mr. Devon here? We need to ask him something."
She shakes her head. "He won't be here until noon. His daughter has a dance recital today." She says. We leave.
"Ok," I say. "So we have to look out for a substitute teacher."
Rachel points to a rock inside the school's trophy case. "On that rock is a tiny camera that will track who comes by. The principal told me that they put it there so in case an intruder came in, they would know who it is."
"Cool," I say. "And?"
"And, since my mom IS the principal of the school I easily synced the coordinates from the camera to my phone. Now we can tell when the substitute will walk in."
"Genius!" I say and we high five. I look at my watch. 6:43. "Come on!" I say. We run upstairs to Mr. Devon's room and get a few weird looks from a couple of janitors cleaning up before the students get here.
Mr. Devon's room is unlocked. No one is in there. "Score!" I whisper. Rachel whips out her phone and pulls up to the security rock. A few art teachers walk by, but no substitute.
We look through a few drawers until we find a notebook that says "for substitute."
I flip it open and see the assigned seats for period four. Rachel looks at her phone. "Mrs. Paula, the lady who subs for math just walked into the building. Hurry!"
I take a pencil and erase Matt's name and put it next to Nicholas's name. Then I erase Cassandra's name and put it next to Brad's name. He smells like rotten cheese and sweat. Revenge.
"She's walking up the stairs!" Rachel says. I plop the notebook on the desk and grab my bag. The two of us rush out of the room. Just as we exit, Mrs. Paula is at the top of the stairs.
Rachel and I breath a sigh of relief.
