Chapter 2 - Paper dreams

"Well it sure looks grand!" Mom said brightly, and began walking toward the entrance. I stood there in shock, staring at the house. Our old one had been cozy and rustic, it was a renovated farmhouse that mom had modernized-the perfect family home. This was the complete opposite: the only way was to describe it was large. Iron gates separated the dwelling from the road. A sweeping driveway lined with trees led
to the front door and pillars held up the balcony that jutted out from the first floor. The whole structure was a sandy colour and, to me at least, ostentatious.

I walked in through the entrance and was overwhelmed by the sheer size of the house.

" I know that it seems uninviting-" dad started as I looked at him scathingly "but you will love it soon enough, I'm just glad that the house was such a great deal!"

Seemingly undeterred by my disdain he began to order the moving men around.

"Hey Vann, why don't you check out your bedroom? First on the left" my mom suggested.

"Fine."

Making my way upstairs I had to admit that it was a nice house, it just didn't feel like home.

My eyes widened as I took in my bedroom, it was huge with glass doors that led to the balcony I had noticed outside. Two other doors in the room caught my attention; the first contained a spacious en-suite, the second a large walk-in closet with rails and shelves for my clothes and shoes. I didn't know what to do with all the space.

"So, What do you think, pretty nice huh?"The hopeful voice of my mom made me turn. In that instant I felt so ungrateful. My parents worked their butts off to support us, here I was standing in a gorgeous room, and I was still complaining. I made it my mission to change my attitude.

" I was unsure at first, but I know that you and dad only want whats best. " I grabbed her and gave her a bear hug. She stroked my hair; the familiar action made me think of Livvy, I felt tears rise but pushed them down.

"So honey, what do you want your room to look like? We can head to the mall later and start looking if you want? You can get some school clothes as well"

I smiled, it would take my mind off other things and mom and I hadn't had a shopping day in ages.

"Sure lemme just freshen up."

-----------------------------------

The car stopped. I pulled my hands away from the side of my chair, getting out of the death machine with haste, and heading into the mall as I massaged my cramped fingers.

"Mom?"

"Yes honey?"

"I was just wondering, how the hell did you ever manage to get your drivers license?!"

"Well.... when I was your age I was a lot better at driving, and, and, the examiner may have been a-" she paused " a close friend, who was a, couple, of years older" Her expression was the same I made when I was caught doing something wrong.

I stopped walking, my mouth dropped open.Scenarios, none of them pleasant, raced through my head. "B-bu-but wait what?!So....sorry, gimme a minute, you're telling me tha-that YOU, as in MY MOM....Seduced your examiner! Oh my god, how much older?" I spluttered.
