There was a moment of silence where we all took in what my dad said.
"Sh-she's gone?" Courtney squeaked.
My dad nodded solemnly, as he wiped away another tear. "I know it's hard to believe but she's really gone."
"It's all your fault." Courtney said softly.
"Courtney, no." Bennett said with an urgency in his voice.
Suddenly it hit me. She was going to tell him everything I saw and heard the night mom went missing. No, no, no....
"Benn, he needs to know." Courtney said with an aggression in her voice that I had never heard before.
"What do I need to know?" my dad asked cautiously.
"The night Mom disappeared. We know everything that happened." my dad opened his mouth to speak. "No. It's my turn to talk for once. Alexis knows everything that happened that night. And she told me and Benn. She didn't trust you enough."
I opened my mouth in shock. "Court, you know I never said that."
Angry tears were now running down her face. "Well it doesn't matter any more. Lexi couldn't sleep, so she was going to ask mom to. She walked out of our room. She walked across the hall to yours and She heard you and mom fighting, but she couldn't hear all the words. She hid behind the plant next to ypir room, trying to listen in. Then she saw mom leave the room. She ran after her. She went on to the deck, where mom was. she saw mom jump off the boat and into the water. And who's fault is it? YOURS! And the stupid press was so convinced you killed mom we had to move completely off the map. You forced us to move from LA--where I was totally fine--to freaking Nantucket! But no. You met Sloane and married her, not even TWO years after mom disappeared!! Amist all of this, you didn't ask ONE of us how we felt! But that doesn't matter does it? Because it's always about you!" Courtney finished her screaming, breathing hard.
There was another moment of stunned silence. My dad looked at me, hurt twinkling in his eyes. "Alexis? You knew this whole time?" I nodded slowly. "Wh-why didn't you tell me?"
"I-I don't know." I said in a small voice.
"I can't take this anymore." Courtney stood up and ran out of the room.
"Courtney!" I called after her. "Courtney, wait!" I stood up and ran after her. I saw a whip of blonde hair turn the corner to the door. I dashed out the door. I pushed tue button to the elevator. Ugh Courtney took it! I think. I sprint down all the stairs instead. I arrived in the lobby, just to hear the door slam shut. I ran out and see my sister. I began walking up to her when a big, black van swooped into the curb. A hand reached out from the backseat and took a fistful of the fabric from Courtney's shirt. It dragged her in. The door slammed shut. The car--which I noticed didn't have a liscense plate--drove out of the driveway and into the night.
