I shovel the food into my mouth, not pausing to taste it. I spent yesterday walking, sometimes running, to an unknown destination. There was no time for food, my only thoughts were to get as far away as possible. The cafe is dirty but is littered with people, blending in here isn't hard. My head snaps up every time the creaky door is opened and the chill wind grazes past me, but my skittish behaviour goes unnoticed. I'm just another person added to the bottom of the pile and sitting in this grimy cafe, that's exactly who I want to be.
The ground is frozen and shimmers as I continue to walk, my back pack heavy on my shoulders. I don't know where I'm heading, I just need to keep moving; stay invisible. The frost glazes the trees, creating an icy trail of stars along their branches. Above me the blanket of clouds are thick and swirling, the silvery grey only letting the smallest rays of brave sunshine through. It's beginning to get darker, a light mist forms in the air and the grey from the clouds seems to seep into the ground below. But as the dusk settles I know I must keep walking until I find somewhere suitable to rest for the night.
The brown, crumpled leaves scurry along the floor trailing behind a whisper into the darkness. I turn, imaging footsteps behind me. My eyes search the empty horizon. Nothing.
I continue to trudge forward, my legs have become heavy, begging me to stop walking. After a few more paces I give in and crumple on the pavement, just outside a shop which had been boarded up, seemingly for a long time. I shuffle so my back is against the alcove of the shop door. My eyes are fighting to close but I know I must check. I must check that there is no one here. I need to know I am safe.
