Nine years later...
The little bundle that had been held in her mother's arms on that dreadful night when they first came was now nine years old. Her mother, Lora, had narrowly escaped the clutches of the demons that had come into their world for nine whole years with the help of Charlotte and Jock. They seemed to be the only people Lora could trust, most humans had willfully bowed down to the creatures in submission to slavery, while others that fought back were immediately killed for defying their rule. Those that now served the creatures were scouts, spies, and could not be trusted. All of humanity had fallen, except for the few that still lived in the darkness, fighting for survival. Hoping that one day, someone would save them from their fallen state and bring the world back to life.
Lora knew better then to hold hopes for things that were impossible and so she taught her daughter, Eira (Eye-ra), the same thing. She taught her in the most harsh of conditions, where food was scarce and the world was dark. She taught her not to trust anyone but Charlotte, Jock, and herself. Lora knew that this was not what she had intended Eira's life to be like, but if she was to even have a life, she would need to heed her mother's words.
Eira always looked up to her mother, to her, her mother was the most strong, courageous, and brave person she had ever met and she wanted to grow up to be just like her. In these nine years her mother had learned to fight with such speed and strength that Eira had a hard time catching up. She tried her best to mimic her mother when they practiced fighting, but it was almost impossible. Her mother was a complete natural and Eira couldn't help but feel a little less than good at what she tried to do.
Eira watched as Jock and Lora sat in practiced combat on the giant mat. Her mother effortlessly dodging Jock's attempted blows. With a swift movement Lora dropped to the ground, extending her leg she swept it swiftly under Jock's legs. Instantly Jock fell, landing on his face as Lora stood, a triumphant smile on her face.
Jock and Lora had come closer since they met that night in that pit. He had seemed harsh and cruel at first, but that was simply because he was frightened and wanted to appear brave in front of the other people, Eira's mother had told her. Jock was a complete sweetheart to Lora now and they had somewhat became lovers as time went on.
Eira shifted her view to the woman who had just sat down next to her, Charlotte. Eira loved Charlotte, she was the closest thing to a best friend that Eira could get and she was thankful for Charlotte's kindness and young spirit.
Charlotte had lost her husband when the creatures first came to Earth. She often talked to Eira about her husband. How tall and handsome he was and how he always treat her right. It had been that fateful night when the street had split in two and a demon had crawled out of the Earth that it snatched him in its clutched and drove the end of its tail straight through his heart.
Charlotte would always wince upon reflecting on the memory and Eira would do her best to change the subject to something more perky.
Charlotte forced a smile in Eira's direction as Eira sat there staring at her. Charlotte was beautiful, she had a young complexion even though she was barely in her thirties and always had a kind and loving expression. She had dark black hair that trailed down her back, never pulled up in giant natural curls. She had dark brown, mysterious, eyes that seemed to twinkle when she smiled. Her skin always looked sunkissed even though they never saw the sun anymore, in fact Eira had never seen the sun.
"How are you little Eira?" Charlotte asked in a gentle voice.
Eira smiled her childish smile, happy to have someone to talk to, "I just wish I could fight like my mother. I want to be like her, but look like you." Eira remarked happily.
Charlotte looked down, saddened by the poor future that Eira seemed to be growing up in. If only she could of had a normal childhood, like she did, running up and down streets in the sunshine, never having to worry about a thing. Charlotte looked into the pale blue eyes of Eira's that sat staring at her with adoration. It was ironic that Eira wanted to look just like Charlotte, when Charlotte wished she had the flawless beauty Eira had.
The little girl's long blonde hair that reached her stomach, her pale blue eyes, bright with hope, her tender love towards everyone, it was all something Charlotte envied about her. She even envied her pale skin, Eira looked so exotic yet simple at the same time, just like Lora.
The playful conversation that had been going on between Jock and Lora suddenly came to a stop as the lights above them flickered and shook. Lora's eyes instantly fell to her daughter, Eira, as she ran to her side, grabbing her hand.
"They've found us," Lora said, swallowing down her fear, she put on her strong face.
Jock stood by Lora's side, holding onto her other hand, "We need to get out of here."
Before Eira could even comprehend what was going on, she was instantly dragged to the right and down dark hallways and up stairs until they came to a door. Jock fought with a lock on the metal door as Lora whispered something under her breath.
"Hurry Jock," Charlotte urged, her eyes filled to fear.
"I'm trying, it won't open!" Jock yelled in frustration.
"Jock!" Charlotte's voice rose as she looked in the direction they had come from, "Jock!" She repeated.
"What?!" He yelled back, oblivious to the sound of running footsteps coming closer to them.
Jock's eyes widened as the sight of white wings and glowing markings came into view on the other end of the hall.
"There they are!" A man with wings yelled, pointing straight at them.
Lora knelt down to look at her daughter, knowing something had to be done, "Eira." She said gently.
Eira pulled her gaze from the white winged people to her mother, tears stinging her eyes, "Mommy?" She asked.
"Mommy has to go for a little, I have to protect you okay? I promise I'll catch up with you guys, I'll be with you before you know it. Alright?" She said as she wiped away a stray tear from Eira's face.
"Lora, you're not going anywhere." Jock argued.
She looked up at him with a saddened expression, "Take care of my Eira." She said gently and with that she was bolting in the direction of the white winged creatures, pulling two guns out of her belt around her waist as she began shooting. The sound of gunshots ringing through the halls.
"Mommy!" Eira screamed as she watched her mother become surrounded, "Mommy no!" She cried as she tried to run towards her mother, but two strong hands caught her.
"Eira, we have to go." Jock said as he watched Lora become overwhelmed by the creatures that were now snatching the guns out of her hands.
Charlotte pulled open the metal door, "Jock, now!" She shouted.
Jock pulled his gaze from Lora as he picked up Eira in his arms, "No! Mommy! Come back!" Eira screamed, tears trailing down her cheeks as she fought against Jock, "Save my mommy!"
Jock didn't answer as he and Charlotte made their way through the door, "I'll take care of her Lora, I promise." Jock whispered, before shutting the metal door behind himself as they continued running out into the darkness of the world.
"Mommy!" Eira continued to sob, "Mommy, come back." She whispered, but as the metal door continued to became smaller and smaller, Eira had the dreadful feeling that her mother wasn't coming back.
